My sister had a beautiful little girl yesterday, and I went to see them today at the hospital. Nursing is going pretty well now despite a slightly rough night adjusting to it (this is her first baby).
while there I noticed a little booklet dropped off by my ds's (and now niece's) pediatrician. We started going to their office when my son was 9 mos old after we moved, so i was curious to see how they addressed breastfeeding to new moms.
I was not too pleased. It said something along the lines of breastfeeding is considered to be the best thing for babies with not much else positive and no reasons as to why breastfeeding is the best thing-- as far as how often to nurse, it actually said 'refer to the formula feeding section'. In the formula feeding section, it said "for those who cannot or choose not to nurse formula is an excellent nutrition source".
the tone of this booklet in general bothered me but also specifically the word excellent in relation to formula.
i have not had any issues at this dr's office related to breastfeeding support, but i am also very confident about it and had a well established breastfeeding relationship before my son's first visit there.
Am I making too big a deal out of this? Should I make a point to discuss it with the drs?
