Mom antibiotics and breastfeeding?

I think I have a UTI and have always used an antibiotic to get rid of them. Can I still BF while taking an antibiotic? Is there anything else to do to get rid of a UTI?

There are antibiotics that are compatible with breastfeeding (many of them!) You need your doctor to precribe you an antibiotic that is safe for breastfeeding. Some are safer than others. I don't have the book to look them up, but I know some other moms here do.

If you post the name of the antibiotic you normally use for UTIs, hopefully someone will be able to look it up (also post your baby's age, because sometimes that is important.). And if anyone with Hale's is reading this, would you be able to look up Bactrim (Septra) and Cipro for this mom, as those are commonly used to treat UTIs? Thanks.

I would think that Bactrim would be safe, because I know someone who treated her baby's UTI with it! Best to check with Hale's book though.

Drinking lots to flush it out can help, and to prevent UTIs, a large glass of cranberry juice a day has been shown to help. hope you are feeling better soon!

I drink a lot of unsweetened cranberry juice when I have a UTI and I cured one when I was pregnant that way. It's hard to find unsweetened pure cranberry juice, but Knudsen's has one as well as a few other health food brands.

i don't know about bactrim, but cipro is safe. i just finished a course for a UTI last week.

(side note: it used to be considered unsafe, but hale has it down as safe, and the AAP recently changed their official stance to say it is safe for BFing as well.)

You can do a search of your drug at

Bactrim and Cipro are L3, moderately safe. I would be OK with either for short term use.

You can also check various antibiotics on kellymom
