I was at a birth tonight and something funny happened, in amongst the quiet beauty. I arrived at the home of K. who was actively labouring. Within a few contractions it became apparent that the baby was coming. My second midwife was on the way. I asked the partner to go to my trunk and bring in my orange medical bag and my tackle box. The baby's head started to crown. I grabbed a pair of gloves and had nothing else besides my prenatal bag. (Usually I have a full kit set up). The partner came bounding up the stairs with two bags in hand-- my diaper bag and my breastpump! He said, "is this what you needed?" I stifled a giggle, realized all hope was gone for my equipment coming before the baby did, and put my attention back to the lovely little girl who slid out into her Mama and Dada's arms. Very sweet. My student came a few minutes later and was able to retrieve my equipment - unneeded and unnecessary.
