Suave commercial is awesome!

(sorry for cross-posting but a negative rumor began about something that should be rewarded) The new Suave shampoo commercial is an awesome boon to breastfeeding, placing it not only as
something normal and beautiful to see on TV but something we can joke about
as well. I was blown-away with joy when I saw it. It first shows a beautiful happy mom with
a baby at her breast --- her gown is open, breasts showing, and the baby is
clearly nipple level at a bare breast. There are two bright happy pops of this,
then the purple words come on saying that 62% of women say that "having a
baby" left their hair and breasts flat --- it didn't say breastfeeding -- and it's
all a little fun/sillyish. Then they say that Suave can leave them fuller. Then we
see the mom again with fuller hair and her breasts are still nicely perky with
baby at them. But now you look at the breasts (and this time there's a bit of
gown above baby's mouth --- maybe open nursing bra or maybe baby's not
nursing at this moment but anyway...) and breasts do look "full" and could
have been perky because she's breastfeeding. That's what I thought.
Regardless, the next time you watch (for those who miss it the first time)
you're going to watch her breasts and notice that she's been breastfeeding
right there in front of you. Either way, there's no intonation that breastfeeding
was causing any flatness. The
latest media headline about breastfeeding not causing sagging breasts leads
to info that suggests that pregnancy (and smoking and other things) may
cause breasts to sag, but not breastfeeding. This commercial, on the heels of
that headline, could very well be tongue-in-cheek that the bf was giving fuller
breasts. Regardless, there they are, a bright, smiling, beautiful (frontal
mother, back of baby) breastfeeding pair popping out on your TV screen as
normal and unembarrassed as could be. Thanks you Suave!!!!

You can see the commercial by going to
http://www.suave.com/
click on beauty
then click on TV ads
Click on "From Flat to Fabulous"

There's actually some controversy about the ad from lactivists online. Some say its great that a big company is at least SHOWING a nursing mom on TV, yay! While others are a little worried that the ad might imply that nursing has a negative connotation on the body. That's because the text of the ad is "62% of moms say that having a baby makes their hair and breasts flat...Suave can help with the hair part" (I am recalling the language from memory, please check out the ad yourselves!)

Obviously it is intended as tongue in cheek; you can see that from the rest of the ads, which are all about how hard it is to take care of yourself when you are a mom, presented in funny ways. But the juxtaposition of the "flat breasts" concept with a nursing picture is a little unfortunate. The ad says that it is "having a baby" that is the cause of breast changes. WE know: whether you bf or ff is irrelevant, but there is a prevalent myth that breastfeeding is related, so this might reinforce that for some people.

My take: overall I'm happy that bfing is being presented (on TV!!) as a normal part of motherhood (and maybe even working motherhood, since the mom is wearing a very tailored blouse) and can overlook the possible misinterpretation since its not specifically stated by the ad.

But its an interesting debate. Is this a step forward for lactivism, or a step back?

Well said, Megan. I was worried about the connection that seemed to be implied at first, but really it is just great to have ANY straightforward images of BFing out there in the mainstream media. Hopefully just seeing it out there will help to normalize BFing. (altho I still think the makers of the ad HAD to be thinking that BFing made breasts "flat" honestly).

i think breastfeeding on tv is good period. i do see that suave was alluding to breastfeeding causing flat breasts though the ad is relating flatness to hair. still, the fact that the ad assumes new moms will breastfeed is good.

I think it's a cute commercial.

I have not seen this yet, sounds awesome.

You know, every time I hear someone insinuate that breastfeeding, not pregnancy, causes flat boobs, I totally want to shove my saggy, never nursed from, tits in their face.

I thought the commercial was cute.

YAY!
I had the same happy reaction when I saw this commercial!
I was like "HONEY! SUAVE just had a breastfeeding woman in thier commercial!!!"

It's sad that it's so rare, but I was ecstatic that they were showing it...boob and all!

HORAY SUAVE!
I may even write them a letter saying that I applaude thier efforts and might use their products as a result...hey they are super CHEEP for tight money days.

I looked on the website and couldn't find it anywhere! Does anyone have instructions to find it now? Do you think they could have pulled it?

I can't find it anywhere either...it's very possible that they have.

NAAO (National Action Against Obesity) is protesting Suave.

From their Press Release:

National Action Against Obesity demands Suave Shampoo pull its anti-breastfeeding TV ad.

Suave TV Spot Concept:
Nursing leaves both your hair and chest flat. Suave can help with one.

"We get the joke," said NAAO President MeMe Roth (who nursed her two children, each for a year). "But misconceptions about nursing have to stop. A flat chest can be blamed on yo-yo dieting, age, genetics--and don't forget gravity--but not nursing.

The commercial doesn't say nursing leaves your hair and chest flat... it says pregnancy does.

Also I just saw this commercial a week ago, so I REALLY hope they didn't pull it. I may write a positive comment on Suave's website.

Suave can make my breasts fuller? Where do I have to put it?

I suppose if you have breast hair, suave could help you out...

So they're implying that using Suave hair styling products leads to perkier boobs?

I don't watch much commercial TV, so I'll have to go out of my way to look for this commercial- unless it's available on youtube or equivilent.

I am a lactivist and I love that comercial and think that picking it a part is kind of harmful to the cause.

The fact is breastfeeding does flatten some peoples boobs-it helped mine but My Mom was a huge C and after breastfeeding two kids for a total of five years her boobs were As. It's important to be honest about the way breastfeeding affects the body and the way it makes woman feel so, that woman won't try and think "what the hec this isn't how people said it would feel/look" etc.

Its a great, great commercial. Its subtle enough to not offend the queasy people, but makes a good point and its cute.

I LOVE this commercial, and I love that I've seen it so often.

From the website, if you click on Motherhood - there's a mom wearing her baby in a sling. :
