xylitol and 20 month old with decay

I'm new here, and have been reading the board incessantly for the past few days since I learned of my daughter's decay. I was so shocked when the dentist told me - I thought her teeth had cracked due to the white marks at the tops! I'm feeling panicked and sad, etc.

Anyway, I went to my local natural food store to find some of the products mentioned in the boards. I didn't see xylitol mints or gum, but I did get a bag of it in granular form (looks like table sugar). Does anyone know how to best use this? I read that you can use it as a sugar substitute in foods, but can i also make a paste or liquid rinse with it? If so, does anyone know how to do this and how much to use? Also, how much is safe for a child her age? I think I read that they need about 8 grams/day to be effective. Does it need to be on her teeth directly to be effective, or is ingesting it also helpful?

I think I remember reading on one of the threads that someone mixed xylitol with water or olive oil and painted it on, or squirted it in her mouth after nursing at night, but I can't find it now. I must have been up late! I am wondering because my daughter nurses A LOT at night, and I don't see that changing easily any time soon.

Thanks for any help!

Xylitol and babies

Hi, I have been using xylitol for my son, now 2.5 and my daughter of 9 months. The granular form is the easiest and cheapest way of using xylitol. One of THE BEST websites for information especially for children and xylitol is www.zellies.com [here is a link to Dr. Ellie's blog
http://askdrellie.blogspot.com/search/label/children] it will give you all kinds of information on how to use xylitol.

And yes, they/she is selling her product on it and her product is VERY good, but you don't have to buy it.

If you've read anything from my other notes, my son had HAD!!! very invasive Childhood Caries. And then he fell breaking some of his front teeth. The first pediatric dentist we took him to had him scheduled for big time surgery and a bridge this before he was 3 yrs old! But I look at his teeth now, 6 months after beginning the xylitol program and WOW!!

His teeth are clean, white, and so...NORMAL. Oh, he still has the broken teeth, but they've healed over - and praise the LORD! - no abscesses! And though the first guy said my son would have difficulty talking, Trenton talks up a storm. His favorite words at this moment are "What's that?" My mom says "WHY?" is coming up. !

Please, go on Dr. Ellie's site, it really gave me a lot of encouragement, plus my mom telling me to do it. All my siblings and I have decided to go the xylitol way too! If it is that good for children it has got to be good for us, too!
