I'm new here, and have been reading the board incessantly for the past few days since I learned of my daughter's decay. I was so shocked when the dentist told me - I thought her teeth had cracked due to the white marks at the tops! I'm feeling panicked and sad, etc.
Anyway, I went to my local natural food store to find some of the products mentioned in the boards. I didn't see xylitol mints or gum, but I did get a bag of it in granular form (looks like table sugar). Does anyone know how to best use this? I read that you can use it as a sugar substitute in foods, but can i also make a paste or liquid rinse with it? If so, does anyone know how to do this and how much to use? Also, how much is safe for a child her age? I think I read that they need about 8 grams/day to be effective. Does it need to be on her teeth directly to be effective, or is ingesting it also helpful?
I think I remember reading on one of the threads that someone mixed xylitol with water or olive oil and painted it on, or squirted it in her mouth after nursing at night, but I can't find it now. I must have been up late! I am wondering because my daughter nurses A LOT at night, and I don't see that changing easily any time soon.
Thanks for any help!
