Question about a pattern

Why does this pattern have the knitter use doubled up yarn only for the first part? The only thing that I can think of is to have a doubly strong bottom of the purse. Is that it?

I think it is mostly to give structure to the bag, but it does add strength, too.

I know the paton's merino felt swatch up as as sample at JoAnn's is pretty flimsy. I think most of my felted patterns call for double stranding.

I made a sophie bag single stranded and the thing is wonderful. Stretchy and big but you can't tell unless you try to stuff it... then stuff just keeps fitting!

I'm incredibly curious why they think that naturally light-coloured wool doesn't felt as well as dyed?

Some brands the "natural" or cream, is actually bleached.
