Changing pattern sizes?

DD is asking me to make her a princess dress, and it sounds like fun (plus it would be nice to have one made of yarn as I wouldn't have to worry so much about her getting cold wearing it in winter). But I've been looking around for patterns, and every pattern I find is not the right size. She liked one picture of a dress I found that was a 2T in the pattern size, but she's a 6-8. I've also found pretty lacey sweaters in adult sizes that I could combine with a skirt pattern to look princess-y, but I have no idea how to shrink a pattern either. I'm something of a novice knitter and crochet-er. I can follow a pattern and figure out how to do most stitches but that's about it.

So does anyone have any tips for how to change a pattern size? I'm not great at guesstimating. I'd love to hear if there's a trick to it.

I've never altered a pattern that way before (I'm kinda math challenged), but I found some sites that might help you.

http://www.onceuponapattern.com/custom/itemsize.html

Hope those help you... Good luck!
