Advantages of longies with a gusset??

I've only worked two patterns for longies: the Aubrey Doodlepants and LTK longies. I've read that other patterns have a gusset and I'm wondering what the advantages are of gusseted longies. Any input??

The fit is better--more room, especially for mobile kids.

A gusset, like short rows, gives wool soakers shape to match your baby. The gusset specifically makes the crotch wider from front to back. It doesn't make a huge difference with newborns, but for crawlers and walkers, it really improves the fit a lot.

That makes sense . . . I've only really used longies for my newborn (my older child can't stand them for some reason). That might be why I haven't really thought, "Hmmm . . . this needs more space." Thanks!

The LTK Picky Pants are my favorite longies pattern and they have a gusset.

I think it makes a more flattering leg shape, too, I guess because you're adding, not taking away, stitches from the circumference when you do the crotch. Gusseted longies fit more like pants and less like leggins.
