Ready to throw in the towel

What are the odds that you would end up with thrush with two different children about 3 years apart? Maybe I should play the lottery!

I had thrush over three years ago with my son Ian. I battled thrush for 3 months before it finally did me in and we converted over to bottles.

I never thought we would have to deal with thrush again, but alas I was wrong. I gave birth to my son Jack in September, he was born 4 weeks early and spent 15 days in the NICU. I spent a majority of that time pumping and concentrated on how much my milk would help him to recover quickly and be a healthy baby. Bf was going well, that is until he turned about 2 months old and then low and behold thrush reared its ugly head. We were treated (with nystatin and GV) and continued to notice little outbreaks which we treated until it was gone. It looked good! We have had about a month of no problems, until I noticed the discomfort. Well its back again.

I am so ready to quit bf! I am just tried of dealing with us, why me!

Why can other bf-ing moms have no problems, but then I am dealing with my second bout of thrush. Sorry for whining, but I have just had it.

Just wanted to send you some support...
I have no experience with thrush myself, but I know what it's like to have problems BFing, and I wanted you to know I think that what you're doing for your children is wonderful.:

You'll get through it again, mama. You have a very fortuante baby to have a mama who gives him what he needs despite obstacles.

Are you sure it is thrush? I suffered with nipple pain for about 6 months with my last baby and no amount of thrush treatment helped. Finally was diagnosed with Raynaud's Syndrome of the nipple, which can occur after another nipple trauma (bad latch or thrush) but can continue after the initial problem has cleared up. Dr. Jack Newman has some information online about it. I got better after taking mega doses of Evening Primrose oil (I think there may be a paper somewhere online about this--Evening Primrose or fish oil also works)

I almost positive its thrush, as my nipples are dark pink and shiny at times along with the some pain. But I will check into the Raynaud's syndrome.
I still have some of the nystatin ointment, so when I noticed the onset again I applied some of the cream which helped relief the pain and discomfort. I just don't want to quit bf-ing because he is such a good bf-er and he really enjoys bf, although there are times when just have had enough.

I do have another dilemma, but I will put that in another post.

We are dealing with thrush too. It can be so painful. Check out Dr. Jack Newman's website. He has some great ways to deal with thrush. We just started trying them yesterday.

I know it's hard, but you can get through it. I have a little nephew that has had soooo many problems with formula that he is at a life-threatening weight and that is so much scarier than having to deal with the discomforts of thrush. You can do it. For your baby's sake, you can do it. Try disinfecting EVERYTHING durring this round of treatment. I mean clothes, bras, baby stuff, pretty much anything that could come in contact with breast or baby's mouth. Just a little yeast left somewhere could start it up again.
