peeling nails and hair loss--deficiency?

The top layer of my nails keeps peeling/separating from the bottom layer for some reason. It used to do it a while ago but stopped and then started again recently. Any idea what could cause this?

Also, I've recently started losing quite a bit of hair. This is another thing that used to happen but stopped a few months ago, only to start up again. What could cause this? I did miscarry 2.5 months ago at 7 weeks--could it be related to that?

Maybe Vitamin A, D & K? I don't know about the hair loss, but are nails something to do with calcium. The fat soluble vitamins make sure calcium goes where is meant to go.

Try zinc and biotin.

I lost a ton of hair about three years ago when going through an incredibly stressful time that would have depleted lots of nutritional stores and I hadn't quite yet started eating TF. Stress can do loads of damage to a body.

Nails-biotin?
hair-I'd check thyroid. Biotin also affects hair, as does EFA's. Vit A and iodine for thyroid...

Do you have white spots on your nails? If so, add zinc.

I second the thyroid check.

Biotin, 5000 mcg a day.

I was told that those were signs of zinc deficiency. I had both those problems along with some other signs of a zinc deficiency. I ate foods high in zinc and noticed that it all seemed to go away gradually. I have no clue why I was so deficient when I ate plenty of foods that had some zinc. HTH

I'm not sure what it is specifically but I had lots of problems with this until I started taking my prenatal vitamins. I started 4 months before conceiving and I'm still taking them (but hope to stop soon since my diet has improved).

Its an imbalance - take DHA (great for stress and depression and makes cells so critical) - as much as you can afford, include liquid minerals and aminos in diet. Look into cleansing and raw diet.

Good sources - Aajonus Vonderplanitz and Alyssa Cohen

I'll second (third, fourth..whatever!) biotin, zinc and getting your thyroid checked. Vitamins A and D should also be looked at from animal sources.

I took 3000 mcg of biotin a day for a long time and I know I still had problems with hair loss while I took it, and I think I had the nail problem then, too. I don't have white spots on my nails. I wonder if both are a thyroid problem, because the hair loss has stopped for a while twice, and both times it was after I'd been taking iodine supplements for a while. I do take vitamin A from fish oil and a liquid D3 supplement.
