Hey Ebony --

Why did they deny the claim? Did they give a specific reason? What kind of coverage do you have?

I don't think that Michigan laws are going to be much help, but maybe federal laws would -- specifically the EMTALA law, which, if memory serves, states that maternity care does not have to take place in a hospital setting.

Here is one resource for homebirth insurance claims info:

non licensed provider, i was about to ask kate but maybe you know. are there any natural appetite suppressants that are ok while nursing? theres some hoodia tea at the better health store but it says not to take while nursing or pregnant. i'm super hungy all the tim and gained 8 pounds since i started my diet on new years. here ive had coconut oil and hemp hearts as a suggestion, and avocados and sweet potatoes

I don't know much about appetite suppresants -- Kate might.

This can be the hardest kind of claim denial to protest. One thing you could use as part of your appeal is if the insurance company covers other professionals that are unlicensed in MI. Do they cover massage therapy or acupuncture? They are both unlicensed professions in MI.

Good luck!

thats a good point, they cover chiropractors i know, the funny thing is that isnt even our insurance company anymore. i guess dh's employer just switched companies but i'm sure that'l make it even harder to get reimbursed now
