What do you use to handwash cotton knits?

All of my yarn labels say to use "soap flakes." What are soap flakes exactly and where do I buy them? Can someone tell me a brand to look for? I have no idea what I am looking for.

I just use Eucalan but you can use baby shampoo.

I would have said Ivory, but it turns out that the Ivory soap flakes were discontinued years ago.

I did find this:

And this:

I have 1940s homemaking book which advocates making one's own soap flakes by grating a bar of Ivory soap. I would assume you could just use bar soap and lather it on your hands before washing the piece...
