I'm in bad shape, so says the dentist. Help me get my mouth healthy again!

Well, I had an appointment today. They said I have 8 cavities, although none are giving me any discomfort. I was also told that the tartar has gotten underneath my gums and could possibly be getting into the roots of my teeth, and that I need a special kind of cleaning that requires going under anesthesia. I am not having anything done for a long time because I'm pregnant, obviously. I've known about the cavities, I can see some of them. I want to avoid having more fillings or having surgical procedures. I know that teeth can be remineralized and cavities can be reversed, but I don't know how that is done. What steps can I take to start treating my teeth now? Are there natural treatments that are safe during pregnancy? The tartar issue concerns me because the dentist said that bacteria can be breeding under my gums and in time it could go all the way to my jaw bone. I've had a stubborn infection that doesn't want to resolve, and now I'm wondering if this gum problem could be the culprit. He also wants my wisdom teeth to be extracted, but they don't bother me one bit and there's no way I'm having that done! So anyway, I need to start taking better care of my teeth, period. What should I do first?

I've been reading a lot lately about xylitol and other natural treatments. I found www.zellies.com to be very helpful. Also if you go there click on Dr. Ellies Blog. She has a complete mouth care that I ordered and so far I really like it. Good luck.

My dd had quite a bit of dental problems when she was only 4. I followed the Weston Price diet (raw milk, raw butter, cod liver oil, good mulit-vitamin, multi-mineral, limit sugar and breads) and after several months her 5 cavities were down to 2. Once her mouth was all better, I got lazy with the supplements and the diet and low and behold, now at 5.5 she has 2 new cavities. So all I can say is it does work, but you need to keep it up or they will come back.

Go with the zellies

Most of my dealings have been with my 2.5 yr old son. He had a truly "rotten" mouth at least according his dentist. Just about every tooth had a cavity and his front teeth were literally crumbling before our eyes. But in 5 months ALL the small cavities had disappeared - remineralized.

Then he fell and broke two of his front teeth, within a week these had healed over. And the big cavity in the back molar, halted.

What did we do? We went on homeopathic remedies and Xylitol. zane'smama advised going on www.zellies.com, I second that.

My mom found the site, and read everything on it, then ordered the candies and gum. Then she found www.xlear.com and www.epicdental.com.

Dr. Ellie, of zellies site, advises using Xylitol for at least 1 year. We started Trenton on the xylitol, he's been on it now 6 months. And the dentist told me he'll see him in July!

We use zellie candy; also SPRY (XLEAR) toothpaste, chewing gum, RAIN spray. I buy the SPRY stuff because I can get it locally; check your local health food store.

Anyway, hope this helps.

If you do this, just remember no cod liver oil while you're pregnant, the vitamin A causes birth defects.

This is a great article I found on this thread (sort of 1/3 down the page).

Here's the article about Dr Price and the diet as well as the research. It's great advice!! I gotta get off this computer, my neck (and tooth) is killing me, ha ha!
