Applebee's strikes AGAIN! Help me plan a nurse-in...

So, after ALL of that national negative attention, Applebee's has struck again.

My best friend met a young mom in her mommies' group who was recently kicked out of Applebee's for nursing her baby. She stood up for herself, said that she knew her rights and refused to leave or stop. The employee insisted, stated that he was the manager and forced her to leave. This all took place in CA, about 15 minutes north of San Francisco. In CA, it legal for a mom to nurse her DC anywhere they are legally allowed to be.

Sooooo... my best friend has written all the local news media and some other legal resources, but in the meantime we want to stage a nurse-in.

Anyone plan one of these? Any tips? How do you pull it off without spending money there?

I'm not much of an event planner, but this has got to be done. Help me!

Oh are you freaking kidding me?! Again? Did this guy not get the memo or something?

I know, I couldn't believe it. Applebee's must be a sucker for punishment or something.

I am shocked. What town was it in ? I'm in the east bay not far so I might be able to attend.

Seriously?!? Wow. I would still try the letter-writing and corporate first to see what's going on at that level. Then, if it's not adequately addressed (again) then , sure another nurse-in sounds about right.

We don't want nurse-ins to lose their power. They should be used judiciously. I think this sounds like a good case for one since the crapplebees folks are repeat offenders. But you should still not rush into it. You'll have a better nurse-in if you do some careful thorough planning. Also, you should have specific goals for what you want the outcome of the nurse-in to be. The response you get from corporate will help you formulate those goals.

Oh, she didn't write to Applebees? or am I misunderstanding? I personally wouldn't support a nurse-in if she didn't try to address this with Applebees first. I know, I know they have done this before. But this specific incident at this specific restaurant at this specific time needs to be addresses by Applebees management.

I imagine it's even more infuriating to have a place that's been reprimanded by us in the past for their terrible practices to be at it again. As these pp's said, we need to use these as opportunities. Some feel that nurse-ins are already over done & we don't want to be seen as those crazy people who are just at it again.

I think that when a careful, thought out plan is used, that's when the best outcome happens. A nurse-in needs to be a response to a violation of a mother's nursing rights not a reaction.

Darn - They just closed both Applebees by me... this makes me want to go there just to nurse! haha

I'm new to "nurse in's" but it seems strange to me that you would organize a whole bunch of ppl to pay to eat at applebees just to nurse there? it's like free advertising for applebees.

or maybe you go and dont eat anything and just nurse?

inform me about nurse-ins.

nak.

Is there a link to the mom's first hand account? Planning a nurse-in based on a report from a friend of a friend? Can't we do better than that?

Thanks for all the support, wise mamas!

I will first organize the whole letter-writing aspect of it, and see what we can get accomplished without the nurse-in. It's funny, I didn't even think of that, given their notoriety. I assume that everyone is up on current events and listens to the news, but it seems likely that this guy has no clue about the recent controversy. :

I will keep you all posted! Oh, and by the way, this was in Terra Linda/ San Rafael, at the Applebee's in Northgate Mall.

If I went, I would order water and one appatizer or one dessert and eat it as slowly as possible so they can kick you out for loitering. Yes I would be giving them some money, but I would be hogging up a whole table for a long time just to eat my ice cream sunday. It would end up loosing them money especially if a lot of people did it at the same time.

That is QUITE true!

It kinda hurts the waitress more than the establishment though.

I can sort of see where you are coming from with the "nurse in."

This, to me, doesn't sound like the appropriate context for a nurse-in. There is much to be done before a nurse-in is called for, or even feasible.

I think the course of action here is to bring Mr. Manager up to speed on both the CA laws, and the recent Applebee's controversy. I would be willing to bet that he will feel his bowels loosen when he realizes that he could bring the same thing on himself and his store. A letter about the incident in his store (cc'd to corporate), a copy of the state law, and some news clippings about Applebee's should get your message across.

It's when he fails to apologize and promise change that you start to consider a nurse-in.

I thought that California was one of the states where breastfeeding was actually covered in the civil rights code? She definitely needs to look into the law and "use her words" by writing to the powers-that-be first. Please keep us abreast (snort, I crack myself up) of what happens!

OR, we could just not eat at nasty Applebee's. Instead supporting local family owned resturaunts that for the vast majority of the time never seem to bat an eye when we nurse. Just a snarky thought...
