a question about clinicial hours for IBCLC?

Okay if you are a LLL for X number of years does that count towards your clinicial hours or is only in the three years prior to the exam?

I thought it was 5 years as a LLLL counted as the x amt of hours (can't remember) necessary to qualify to take the exam.

You get 500 hours a year for being a LLLL, and you can go back as far as necessary to count BC hours. It's the CERPS that are only good for the 3 years preceding the exam.

So if you have the contact hours and CERPs and educational requirements...what then are the costs to becoming certified? Anything besides taking the exam? What about the cost of the exam itself?

The cost for the exam is $500 ($460 if you register early, and $590 if you register late).

Yikes! Ouch! That's a deterrent if one isn't making an income from being IBCLC certified.

It has been awhile but I remember they allowed 500 for being a LLLL; not for each year of service.

I got most of my hours very quickly (three years) volunteering in the local hospital and got to do the rounds and learned besides staff IBCLC. Most hospital Board certified LC's on staff are open and receptive to helping aspiring IBCLC.

I was a lay person (postpartum doula / childbirth educator for many years) and it was Very good experience for me to see the broadest range of issues relating to mother and baby’s breastfeeding and health issues. I got to work frequently with children who had Down syndrome, birth defects, cleft palate, severely premature, also women with grave maternal medical issues, fetal death, re-lactation, etc.) not just the typical latch-on and women who got off to bad start common issues.

From the above link at the IBLCE website about documenting clinical hours:

"La Leche League Leader: Beth can receive 500 one-to-one BC Hours credit for every year of service. She should request a letter from La Leche League International verifying her two years of service to document:
1000 one-to-on BC Hours"
