Easy DIY costume ideas

My son's preschool is holding a little costume party this Friday for Carneval, and the kids are supposed to get dressed up.
My son doesn't quite "get" the idea of dressing up, and has never been interested in it before. I am looking for ideas for an easy costume that does not freak him out (he won't do wigs or too many accessories). I am not handy with a sewing machine, so sewing is out of the question.

Any ideas?

Is there any kind of theme or something your DS would like to dress up as?

DDs favorites for quite a while were ears on headbands, I htink she msotlye liked taking them off and putting them on again. http://sewing.about.com/od/hallowee1...tmouseears.htm

The hard hats always seem popular at our playgroup. our IKEA has little reflective waistcoats which DD loves.

How about a night. You could use a playsilk or get some fabric at the fabric store. You could fasten or tie a length of it as a cape. then two squares could be tied to gather to make the "body armor". A shield is easily made from cardboard.

Hm, good ideas!

I've been working on telling him about dressing up, and he said he wants to be a kangaroo. Not sure how to pull that one off, I am trying to talk him into some other kind of animal... I only have 2 days to make this!

I like the headband idea- Ill see if he will keep one on this afternoon.

I've made tons of costumes for my kids and lots of them were no sew. Will he wear a hat? A really really easy one that I did was Robin hood (could be peter pan too) the only thing I sewed was the hat and the quiver but both could be glued.

I think I can get him to wear a hat...

So far, a dog is his top choice. I thought about buying some felt and making ears to attach to a headband, but I'm not sure about how to do the tail. I thought about knitting one that will curl around the edges, but it is a bit time-consuming.

try searching this forum. I'm sure I've seen tail sewing instructions.

From what I remember cut out 2 tail shapes from felt/whatever, sew round the edges and stuff. Then either sew the tail onto a pair of trousers or add a triangle of fabric to the end. the triangle can then be stuffed int he waistband of the childs clothes.
