Collecting donations in bottles??

Our church funds a ministry for pregnant moms called Pregnancy Crisis Center. They help the moms decide what to do with the pregnancy, teach them things they need to know, and give them some free stuff. Every year my church hands out bottles and we are supposed to put money in them for 2 weeks or so. I really don't like that they use bottles. I assume they think it is cute, whoever thought of the idea.

At first I thought I would re-decorate my bottle and put Breast is Best on them but when I saw the bottles I don't want to ruin them. So now I'm thinking I will use a breastmilk storage bag! What do you think about that?!

And now I just though I should put a whole bunch of the bags on the table to others to take instead of the bottles. HMMM I'm still iffy on that one.

Anyway my little attempt at lactivism.

The main problem I see with the bags is that they won't stand up on their own and there's no good way to close and reopen them. The bottles are clear, stand up by themselves, have screw-on lids, and were probably purchased at a dollar store for <$1 each.

The bottles are bad, but they're "baby-related" piggy banks.

I think people would switch over if you found cute piggy banks and put some baby related images on them. Like stickers of swaddled babies.

I don't know that anyone but lactivists would understand or use the breastmilk bags, and they might end up being taken to the church kitchen and put in with the freezer bags.

It was definitely a good catch to spot the lactivism opportunity with this.

I would try and talk to whoever is in charge of this particular fundraising program. It's too late to change the collection that's already underway, but maybe she'll (or he'll) be open to using a different kind of "piggy bank" in the future.

Maybe we can brainstorm on this thread to get some alternative ideas. Baby bottles, like it or not, are fairly inexpensive, so alternatives might cost more money (leaving less money free for helping the pg women.)

Maybe sippy cups?

How about empty baby-wipe containers?

A toy box that people can "fill?"

Diapers come in big boxes sometimes. How about one of those big boxes?

I don't know. Just trying to think of something other than bottles.

They have been doing this for a few years. It has to be something small that person can take home with them. Maybe even carry with them throughout the day, which is why the bottles are used.

I have seen this done at another church before, but they used little knitted booties.
