Healing cavities in a 17 month old

I have been reading these boards for a while now, and I am starting a xylitol treatment on my 17 month old son. His front teeth have been chipping for a while now and he has a couple of spots that look like cavities. He nurses lots at night still and probably will for a long time to come. Anyway, since I have been using the xylitol, it seems like the cavities are getting darker. I think I remember reading that when the cavities get darker, it means that the bacteria are dying. I hope I am right. Can someone correct me if I am wrong. Right now I am only using xylitol so if there is anything else I can do I hope someone could tell me. I really don't want my baby to have horrible teeth. I didn't have a cavity until this year and I am 24. I just hope that I can heal these and save him from the trauma of bad teeth. Thanks in advance for you help.
