It seems that most women (that I have spoken with) who have a c section are CONVINCED that the baby would have died if not for the gallant doctor who saved them. I feel that a portion of the justification comes from the moms themselves as a way of coping with the surgery and recovery. (not to place blame, I would do the same exact thing) I have to doubt that depression, poor nursing, future complications, infertility, etc is explained during the 'informed consent' discussion.
The US health care system does not place much value on mental health, bonding, or breastfeeding--so it really doesn't surprise me that they can keep justifying the US c section rate. I read somewhere that many of the complications from c section are NOT listed in mortality stats as resulting from the surgery.
Sorry that was rambly. Any other thoughts?
