i'm not sure if i should post this here or in breastfeeding, but i'll try here first. i developed an immense fear of flying when i got pregnant and have not been on a plane since. my dd is now 2 and we are planning a trip to go somewhere warm! i am really motivated to go to the beach, but i am scared to fly. i am going to do hypnosis, but i feel like i should have some medication in case i have a complete panic attack on the plane. my fil is a dr. and suggested valium or larazopam (sp?). can i still nurse if i take one of these or 1/2 of one?

any experiences are appreciated!!!

ps- i do rescue remedy and that will be my first line of defense should i need something...

My psych actually told me xanax was best because it has a short half life. You might checkout the kellymom site or find someone with a Thomas Hale's Guide. For the record, I have never had to take pills having the bottle in a crunch has been enough for me

I've never tried Xanax, but I believe Ativan and Klonopin also have short half lives.

Ativan has a short half life, Klonopin on the other hand has a long half life (30-40 hours).

Will you be nursing on the flight? Could you not nurse on the flight? Check out what Dr. Hale says about how much passes into the milk.

I'm pretty sure Ativan (lorazepam) is safe. My psych prescribed it for me when I initially started Zoloft, just in case it made me anxious at first. She knew I was nursing ds, who was not quite a year old at the time.

I checked out Dr. Hale's website

He advises against Xanax and suggests Ativan. He doesn't recommend pumping and dumping, especially in a one time kind of situation. I think he said Klonopin was okay too.

Also, I think it depends a lot on the frequency of your nursing, and how old your nursling is. I hope you have gotten good information by now
