What did you eat after the birth?

I remember reading a birth story where someone said she ate a steak after the birth, to replace iron from the blood loss. That sounded like a really good idea, though I wonder if I'd be bothered to cut and chew so much right after labor!

What did you choose as your first meal or snack after birth and why? Did it end up being just what you needed?

I ended up having a cheese and veggie bagel sandwich from Tim Horton's, because that's what was available in the hospital. Not my usual preference, for sure, but I was starving and it tasted wonderful!

That is wonderful for hospital food! I had to eat hot tuna casserole with corn in it. :Puke

Sushi, chocolate and all the forbidden cheeses. That is my post-partum meal. Yummy!

I didn't have a good plan in place. I wound up having a piece of homemade cheesecake and a pepsi. It was SO DELICIOUS! I didn't eat for pretty much 18 hours, so..... YUMMMM!

I gave birth at 6:30 am, so I had a bagel from Einstein's first. Later someone went out - I think to Cracker Barrel, so I would've had fish and mashed potatoes and stuff. I thought I'd want sushi, but at 6:30 in the morning, I just... didn't.

I never really thought about it before but I had my son at 11:50pm and just wanted toast and peanut butter. Come to think of it…that’s all I ate for about 2 or 3 days lol. It’s all I wanted.

That sounds good RIGHT NOW. : I have never even heard of such a thing, now I am going to have to make myself one....Drooling at Keys... LOL.

After my C section I starved for hours and hours and hours. I had to implore them to let me have water.
After my lovely homebirth I had scrambled eggs with cheese, toast, and bacon and I think tea and juice. It was so perfect. I ate a HUGE plate of it.

Whatever you want.

After my first homebirth DH ran out and got me a big breakfast from McDonalds which I would normally hate but that was THE best breakfast ever!

After my second homebirth my midwife and I sat on my bed and ate ripe peaches

After my most recent homebirth my very good friend made me scrambled eggs.

I impulsively requested raisin toast with peanut butter, and devoured that. I don't recall having much of an appetite for anything for a while (couple of days) after that. I ate, obviously, but I don't remember caring what I ate.

My husband is under orders to start cornmeal pancakes as soon as the placenta is out! With my first (a hospital birth), I had a leftover from dinner roast beef sandwich (four or five hours old). I'm sure it was terrrible but it tasted so good.

My friend brought me a lemon slush from Sonic the next day, that was awesome.

With my oldest I had a fruit salad-especially peaches.

With my second, I had a grilled chicken sandwich.

With my third, I cannot remember-LOL!

Enjoy!

I don't remember what I ate after my first, as it was in the hospital. I'm thinking it was a tiny little sandwich and I was still starving since I was in labor for 27 hrs and not "allowed" to eat

After my second I really thought I'd want enchiladas which were my fav pregnancy meal. So my mom and dd made them while I labored but I ended not really in the mood for them. Finally my MW said I had to eat something so I settled on scrambled eggs and apple slices. I'll probably ask for scrambled eggs again after this birth as it good protien, easy to eat and comfort food for me. It was 8pm and I hadn't eaten dinner, but I was just too full of adrenaline!

With my first, it was chili that my mom had made, I also ate it some during labor (when she makes chili, she make a LOT). With my second, just normal breakfast for us, eggs. I've had two homebirths, so I wasn't overly ravenous after the birth, I munched on things throughout labor (being nauseous also isn't a problem for me during labor, so I've never had to factor that in either).

I may be the anomaly, but I have never felt hungry during my labors or afterward. When I had my first she was born at night and I thought I wanted pancakes the next morning for breakfast. I got some, but didn't have any appetite.

During labor I only eat when dh/my midwife cajole me into it, I'm just not that hungry. After labor I am STARVING and dh makes me scrambled eggs and toast. His scrambled eggs are the best and they taste especially good after birth. He just made them off the top of his head after I had our oldest, then did the same with our youngest. I've requested the same this time also, he didn't even realize it was such a big deal to me!

After my first c-section they wouldn't let me eat for days --- really. It was insane. I didn't eat in my 48 hour labor either and I was dying and couldn't nurse. I was chomping ice chips on day two after the delivery and just miserable and desperate. When they finally let me order hospital food they said "liquid only" but dh snuck me a real meal from the kitchen next door and I had a tray with a tuna salad sandwich and a coke (and I don't drink soda). I remember it to this day as the most delicious thing I've ever eaten. That's what starvation will do to you.

After my failed vbac and second c-section, I insisted on eating much sooner and the much nicer hospital accommodated me. With the memory of my first in mind, I ordered tuna-salad and enjoyed it immensely. I was stronger quicker, recovered much quicker and had a much better time establishing nursing.

I don't know if its just the power of imprinting from the first birth or what, but tuna feels like a real post-partum food to me! (Maybe especially because I avoid it during pregnancy.)

Hmm, eggs seem to be a recurring theme here. I suppose because so many of us deliver in the early hours of the morning. I think I will have the provisions to make either scrambled eggs and toast if it's morning, a bagel or sandwich if it's lunchtime, and that almighty steak with sauteed spinach for dinner. In fact, I might have all three in the 24 hours after the birth!
