Internet Filter says BFing Page is R-Rated

I'm in a state of SHOCK! Not that this is a huge deal in the scope of things...but I'm just shocked. I tried to Wikipedia "let down" for breastfeeding...and our school's computer network blocked the site. The reason said "R-Rated"

When did breastfeeding become R-Rated?!!!!!

The word "breast" doesn't make it through net-nanny filters. My mom is also a high school teacher and she tried to research "breast cancer" and it got blocked; also when I had emailed her about breastfeeding, she never got the email.

Our school filter ends up blocking a lot of things that are not R-rated... perhaps if some suspicious words are in the source of the page, even if they're not visible, the site gets blocked.

About the wikipedia page, I can sort of see the point, unfortunately I know what my junior high boys would be doing all study hall if they could go to the library and look at boobies... even if they were lactating boobies. I can see the point of blocking some web sites from a school just because they are distracting in a learning environment.

When I was a school library we had a similar filter. We had the option of submitting specific sites to the computer administrators to be "unblocked", or in the case of a research project that required a large number of kids who were well supervised, we could have the filters "taken down" for a specific block of time and then replaced once our class period was over.

It's not ideal, and believe me as a librarian any censorship issue is troubling, but it's an understandable thing in a school with ages 5-15 (the age of our oldest 8th grader) and open access to library computers during free times.

The irony of this is that the majority of adolescent boys who would want to see breasts of the porn-variety online would put "Boobs" or "Tits" into the search engine! I doubt "breasts" would be the first adjective they would search....

I'm with you...I totally understand because of the jr. high boys and things get blocked with a blanket censor of sort. I was just shocked to see "breastfeeding" with "R-Rated" beside it. My first thought was how could they!!
Anytime Bf'ing has come up in class (student initiated...I've had girls ask if I still bf DS) the guys are usually ready for the subject to change fast.

I caught a teenage boy looking at a breastfeeding book in the corner of the library.
