Needs Constant Encouragement...

We had our parent/teacher conference for my 4yo yesterday. They were full of praise for him as a person, sweet, funny ,etc. But his teachers are concerned with his work habits. He rarely will choose a work on his own and even when the encourage him, he only wants to work with the teachers sitting right there with him the whole time. He is very resistant to challenge himself. He is the same way at home, doesn't want to do anything he considers "hard". I think he's (to borrow a term I heard here recently) a discouraged perfectionist. He's so afraid of doing something "wrong" he doesn't want to try anything new at all. He's always been a little on the cautious side...he cruised forever, he didn't let go and walk on his own until about 15 months and totally rock solid on his feet.

So we are going to work on encouraging him to try new things and do "challenging works" at school, but already (after one tiny mention this morning) he is so resistant. I love to hear advice/suggestions from some other M mamas. I'm pretty committed to staying with his school through the K year, but if any of you mamas had a similar child who was better off in a different school environment, I'm open to other ideas as well.

Thanks!

I can't offer any advice because my 3 year old DD is the same way. VERY cautious and uses "I can't" a lot lately. Maybe this is just a phase?
