Interesting discussion of how the lactating breast disappeared as a symbol of God’s love in the Christian church.

God's love, mother's milk
An image of salvation

http://www.christiancentury.org/article.lasso?id=4272

Partial quote:

“Consider, however, another visual expression and presentation of God's love for humanity. Dozens, perhaps hundreds, of late medieval and Renaissance paintings and sculptures depict the Virgin Mary with one breast exposed as she is nursing or preparing to nurse the infant Christ. The origins of the image are disputed, but whatever its origins, depictions of the lactating Virgin acquired new meaning and new urgency in mid-14th-century Tuscany. In communities under siege from plague, wars and malnutrition, the Virgin's breast was a symbol of God's loving provision of life, the nourishment and care that sustain life, and the salvation that promises eternal life.”

I was just coming to post this, LOL!

I loved this part:
Quote:
In many of these paintings of the nursing Virgin, Christ twists around to gaze at the viewer, making eye contact that establishes the viewer's identification with Christ and invites the viewer to share the nourishment of the Virgin's breast.

Read this last week when DH's copy arrived in the mail and was waiting for it to go online to post here. Check out the magazine's home page to see the beautiful cover art:

As a Christian who believes that God's design is very intentional, I am always trying to help other women see what an incredible thing it is that our God gave us this beautiful means of nourishing our children. The history of the depiction (and now lack thereof) or this blessing is so interesting!!!!

I have a Ph.D in Renaissance Art History, and part of my dissertation focused on the Virgin Mary nursing the Christ Child. Unfortunately most rich people sent their kids off to wet nurses in the countryside...

Interesting article.

Printed a copy for Mom, sent the link to a couple of ministers I know.
Could be hearing about this bit of history some Sunday down the road.

It also reminds me of a quote I read many many years ago which asked how the world, or maybe this country, would be different if the primary symbol of religion were a woman birthing instead of a man being tortured to death. Same could be asked of a woman nursing rather than....

Its funny how you start seeing relationships, and the same idea coming up in different ways and places.

Last Friday, I attended a lecture by Penny Van Esterik

Quote:
Dr. Van Esterik is a medical anthropologist who works in Southeast Asia. She is the recipient of the 2007 Weaver-Tremblay Award and has been a key figure in the international promotion of breastfeeding and infant nutritional programming
(She's Cdn - one of her books is "the Breast-Bottle Controversy")

Anyhow, she said that regardless of whether you were bfed or not, the commonality across all human beings, anyplace, anytime, is that they were nurtured by another person - first by the mother in the womb, then for a period time afterward (most likely by the mom, and for most of history, at the breast).

But for some weird reason anthropologist and historians spend much of their time and interest studing human conflict - wars, weapons, etc, and their artifacts. Instead we should be studying nurturing.

I just saw this at the library last night. I would have never otherwise picked the magazine up had it not had a beautiful photo of a nursing Madonna statue on the cover. Great article - I even photocopied it for my art history professor, who may end up using it in the classroom!
