Goldenseal powder for cord care?

Is anyone doing this? Do you know how to go about it? I imagine you buy goldenseal powder and sprinkle it on the umbilical cord, but how much and how many times per day?

I have done it with with children and not and didn't notice much of a difference. It was kind of messy. Yes, you just by the goldenseal powder or open up a capsule and put it on the cord(the powder adheres to the moist cord stump and coats it). My childs cord stump was bleeding a little and I tried this as a means of helping keep it healthy and dry it out. In the end, the pediatrician just put a little silver nitrate on it at the baby's WBC and that was that. So, I don't know if that helps, but I don't plan on doing it this time around.

I ordered some and it didn't come in capsule but in a little jar. I too just plan to put a little pinch on the stump a few times a day. I didn't like the silver nitrate they put on DS's cord in the hospital. I'm not sure what I didn't like about it, but goldenseal just seems more natural.

We used this for ds. We just rolled a q-tip in the goldenseal powder (came in a little jar) and tapped off the excess, then coated the cord stump liberally.

we sprinkled our last three and the cord was off by three days. you just sprinkle it on the moist parts. i loved it, totally worth the little bit of mess. the little jar of goldenseal is also great for cuts, esp. bleeders.

We've never used it, but after dd nasty cord we plan to this time. I've also read you can mix it into a paste to put on the cord.

I asked my midwife about this yesterday. 3 or 4 capsules of the powder came with the birth kit we ordered -- she said this would be MORE than enough because the goldenseal dries the cord out really well so it falls off within about a week. She suggested rolling a q-tip in it and swabbing the cord with that. I figure she knows better than we do!

We used it. We had about 4 capsules and I'd just open them up when the stump was moist & sprinkle a tad onto it, then close the capsule up until the next time. It worked well, and works well for injuries!

I used it with both of my boys and plan to again with this baby. I got the capsules and just opened one up and tapped a little out onto the stump. Both lost their cord in less than a week.
