Wisdom teeth and sedation and EBF

Ugggh. I've put it off long enough. I need to have my wisdom teeth extracted. Question: I am EBF my 5 month old DS. I am VERY claustrophobic and will need to be sedated for the event. What drugs are safe? Which should I avoid?

Thanks!

I don't know about the drugs but are you sure you have to have them removed? My dentist tells me to have mine removed everytime I'm in there but he also says there is nothing wrong with them - no decay, no problems, plenty of room for them in my mouth, etc. My orthodontist told me it was unnecessary to have them removed so who to believe? My gut says to just leave 'em alone. However, if you do have them removed, my dentist gave me some great advice - take pain reliever every 4 hours the day before having them removed so you will not swell as bad. Swelling = pain.

I just had my wisdom teeth removed.. After what i went through I would recomend doing 2 at a time.. I had all 4 out.. I choose not to have the sedation because I b-feeding.. Now I have a history of rape so i was so afriad of having someone so close to my face.. I got 4 needles per side.. The dentist then waited a hour to pull the teeth... The actual teeth pulling is minutes..

I also never took the steriod that they prescribed.. As it was a level 3.. Yes I was swollen, the swelling lasted for 3-4 days and thats it..

Its not as scarey as everyone makes it out to be..

I had all 4 removed when DD was 2 months (EBF). I was sedated. The surgery was fine, the meds were fine-- just make sure to tell them you are bfing. I did pump and dump once right after the surgery, but I figured with the meds I had, once I was no longer groggy, it was safe. However, I had 3 dry-sockets. The odds are astronomical for that to happen- ask for stitches, though. Some docs don't do them routinely and it helps preven dry sockets.

Also, almost any painkillers they prescribe will be fine (loritab, loriset, vicoden, etc). LacMed is a wonderful database to look up medications.

Best wishes, and speedy recovery!

I'm glad I had all four done at once - it's over with now!

Ask your surgeon what they'll use.

Mine said:
lidocaine
vicodin
fentanyl
versed
propofol
and maybe an antibiotic like amoxicillin or penicillin

which were all L2 or 3. You should avoid valium (diazepan)

I was on vicodin for about nine days, then 8mg codeine and ibuprofen. I pumped and fed when I was due for drugs, and gave the milk in bottles if I was maxing out on drugs (apparently vicodin peaks in your blood one hour after you take it). But you don't have to do that.

Do warn your partner that even if you seem with it immediately after you probably still aren't fully out of it.

I would never remove the wisdom teeth unless it was a life threatening situation. Any tooth that's removed can lead to cavitations when the socket is improperly cleaned:

The odds for dry socket increase with being under general anesthesia as opposed to being awake. I'm not sure why, but I was knocked out for my surgery and I got dry sockets and it took 2 weeks for me to feel okay. The recovery time without it is much, much shorter. Just something to keep in mind.

Wow, I would have loved, loved, loved recovery to only be 2 weeks! I had to go in every other day for a month to get my sockets packed with clove oil (once again, not trying to scare anyone! my wisdom teeth were wedged in and rough coming out)...

And LactMed is my new favorite website

It may have something to do with not keeping your mouth clenched on the gauze while you're coming around?

You'd seriously take narcotics daily until the things rotted out of your head? Sorry, if a nerve is infected and decaying I'm having the nerve out. Besides, compromised teeth lead to a risk that the infection can spread through your blood, to your heart. That's bad.
