s/o thread - cloth napkins? - Page 2

Cloth is worth it!! If you use napkins a lot, you will always get your moneys worth. However, I wouldn't pay that much. Definately shop around.

I got all our napkins at end of season sales, always a pack of 4 for $1 (we have about 12 sets , I love my napkins!!). I'm lucky in that no one here really buys cloth napkins so I always clean up at the end of season .

These are mine:

I just cut the fabric, fold it over 1/4 inch and iron, fold over another 1/4 inch and iron again (well maybe a little bit more than 1/4 inch the second time) and then sew the hem. There's not much easier than that!

We've been using them for about a year and they look great. I recommend fabric with a pattern so stains don't show.

I use wash cloths for wipes. They are more absorbent than most "real" napkins, even all cotton ones. dd even notices the poly ones at restaurants don't "work" - can't wipe up spills, just moves the water around the table.

I can't go to a thrift store without looking for cloth napkins. That's where all mine are from.

We just use regular ol' dish towels.

Not nearly as cute as the one above but I SCORED today at Vinnie's. I got a set of 10 and a set of 12 cotton cloth napkins, even dark and patterned, for $4.50 total. I was psyched!

I've always used cloth napkins, so I can't even remember what I paid for them 15 years ago. I think I got them at TJ Maxx for a dollar or two apiece. They're still going strong after all this time, so I think they're definitely worth the investment. If you think about what you'd spend on paper napkins over even just one year, I think it evens out. I have seen decent ones at Target recently; a 4-pack for under $10 .

honestly, every time i tried to use a regular cloth napkin, it was so huge. take one, fold it into quarters, and take a look at it. it's PERFECT for every day meals, still more absorbent than a paper napkin, and PERFECT for kids! my kids use the same one all day. (unless they get it too dirty.) and the best part of all, instead of 8 napkins, i got 32!!!

I have found great napkins at vintage stores. Usually I come across something that has embroidery on it, or is real linen. And yes, they are often a bit threadbare or perhaps a stain or two, but the vintage look is fun for us and we don't mind the 'pre-loved' look!

I use my sewing machine as a serger-- I use either a zig-zag stich or one of trhe decorative stiches my machine has... Set it for a long stich length and short width... I made a bunch of napkins (and years ago tablecloths) like this.. Happy sewing!!
