How do I become a childbirth educator?

I'd like to become a childbirth educator while working towards becoming a midwife, but I don't know how. Are there any classes I can take? How much do they usually cost?

This link will take you to a chart that shows the various childbirth educator programs and their details (including cost). You can find out summary details of each on their websites (google them if you have to).

Be aware that this summary chart comes from Childbirth International, so they're probably trying to make themselves look good. At any rate, it's a quick and dirty glance at the programs.

the chart in incorrect on many counts when it comes to ALACE (most of them) if you find yourself interested in that CBE program you'd be better off speaking to the office directly. www.alace.org

I don't know how accurate this chart is for the other programs.

The Bradley Method of Natural Childbirth offers certification. I was very happy with the curriculum.

Check out Birthing From Within for a wonderfully complete and soulful approach to Childbirth Preparation: www.birthingfromwithin.com

Their program has deepened the way I live MY life, not to mention how its affected the parents I mentor! If you're really passionate about birth and want to bring an amazing, insightful approach to the families you'll work with, I highly recommend Birthing From Within!

Good luck

I am working on my CBE cert through CAPPA. It is giving me a lot of groundwork for childbirth education. Eventually, however I plan to enroll in BFW's mentorship program as that is where my heart is. Reading the book prior to the birth of my second really changed my view of birth.

ALACE offers really comprehensive certification. LOTS of reading and learning activities, it's very thorough.

I am also working with a woman who is sort of my mentor right now on doula stuff and teaching childbirth classes, and she teaches a form of Birthing From Within. I have been really impressed with how she teaches and the parent response, so once I am out teaching on my own I think I'll probably be blending a bit of both. I am not familiar with the BFW curriculum, but I like the philosophy a lot.
