Hey all, I'm new to this forum. I have a few questions about second parent adoption in NYC. My wife and I are 22 weeks pregnant. We have no idea what we need to do first to get the ball rolling. We appreciate all the help we could get. Thank you.

hi there, and congrats!

have you talked to the people at the Family Program at the Center? They seem to know a lot about all this. When i lived in NYC i went to their "single moms and wanna-be moms" group and learned a lot.

Hi there,

My partner and I live in upstate NY, and we are 27 weeks pregnant. The first thing we did to get the ball rolling on the adoption was to get a good family lawyer who specializes in adoption. We both have to go through background checks, fingerprinting, and a home visit. Our lawyer has facilitated all of this and made it really easy for us. We are expecting our home visit to be the middle of next month. Once our daughter is here, we'll have everything ready and will just need to have our day in court where it all becomes legal. Good luck to you and your wife!

hi
We live in Pa and there is an organization called Equality Advocates here. I don't know if there is anything like this in NY but it's worth looking into. It's a law firm ( non-profit) that represents/ works with GLBT issues. And they represent people Pro Bono. All we have to pay for are all of the court costs (which can vary) But if you could find something like that there they are a great resource. There is an income requirement but if you don't meet it they give you a great referal. I hope this helps.
