Anyone wanna do a February floss challenge with me??

You would think that after....

Knocked out baby teeth and fractured jaw
Braces and headgear for 7 years
Gingivectomy
Maxillofacial surgery with cheek and chin implants, 22 screws and 4 plates
Permanent loss of sensation in lower lip and chin, plus neuralgia
And most recently, 2 hours of ROOT PLANING..

That I would have learned to take really, really good care of my teeth!! Actually, they're in remarkably good shape, all things considered. BUT apparently, I have been left with shortened roots and some nonbacterial gum disease. I NEED to floss every day. But I haven't been. It's 6 weeks till my next 4-monthly cleaning. Anyone wanna be my floss buddy?

I'll be your floss buddy
I really, really need to start flossing. And so does DD...
Maybe it will help if I'm accountable to someone

Okay, Thixle. You're on. It's 9:00 pm here and I haven't flossed my teeth yet. But it's not February yet, is it? My goal is to floss every morning. If I don't, I'll be "too tired" at night. I'll check in here every time I do! You too? Thanks! Our gums will thank us.

Hi thixle:

It's 3:26 PM. I just flossed.

How 'bout you?

I thought about doing it this morning...

I will be flossing at night with DD because we've been slacking off of brushing every night, too I think I'll keep the floss in the shower so she will see it during her bath-- that girl is a floss junky and I have to hide it, or it will all be gone... Of course, then no one can find it!
Maybe if it's in the shower, she won't think about it until bathtime Worth a shot.

I've noticed my gumline getting sensitive, and receeding a little.
Ugh. I had braces for 4 freaking years. Haven't had a cavity in... holy cow... 13 years. Everyone over 50 in my family has false teeth. I just really want to keep my teeth... Thanks for starting this thread!
Maybe some more people will jump in....
(and you know who you are, you need to floss, too! )

hi ladies!

i will so join you int his endevor! i reeeeeeeaaaallllly need to floss, i have periodontal diease and i need four MORE crowns, i had all kinds of stuff done in this last year and now i get to shell out $2000 more this year. yikes!!! i'd liek it to stop...let's floss together!

first day here...haven;t floss yet but then again i've been working all day. i guess i should floss before bed. does it really matter when you floss? i'd be more liekly to floss right when i get home from work before i sit down at all and realize that i'm tired from the day. i guess flossing anytime is better then no flossing.

I'm in! I'm flossing and very gently scraping plaque/calculus at the gumline with dental tools (disinfected in hydrogen peroxide). You can find dental picks at the drugstore but my hygenist gave a set to me for free.

I'm actually amazed at how much gross stuff is left even after you brush well. I go through phases of being good about flossing, scraping and rinsing -- I just need to stick to it no matter HOW tired I am at night.

How's everybody else doing? I would have forgotten today if it weren't for this thread!

Racecarma, I will ask about the dental tools. I have 6 weeks to go before my next cleaning. I don't want to go through what I went through last time.

My hygienist (sp?) said power toothbrushes are better than manual ones for getting plaque and massaging at the gumline. Right now I'm using those replaceable head toothbrushes, but I think I have an electric one somewhere. Guess I'll go dig that out. My hygienist also gave me this little tool that looks like it has a bottle brush on the end of it, to get between my teeth better. She said it's the first thing periodontists give their patients. Post when you floss, ladies!

Mind if I join? I need to do the February Floss Challenge too!

We had a "family emergency" but we've been flossing
I just haven't been online...

Anyway, can you get the "bottle brush" thingies at a drugstore?
I used to scrape my teeth with a dental pick, I'm a coffee drinker and it just accumulates in the crack between my front teeth-- I need to get new tools when I'm out today

Hi everybody! Looks like we're doing pretty well, so far.

Thixle, I think you can get the bottle-brush thingies at the drugstore; but I haven't checked yet, since the dentist gave me a bunch of replacements. I wish I knew what they were called, though, so you could ask for something other than the "bottle brush thingies!"

I'm used to asking for weird things like that-- you know, "Where is that glue-stuff you put on cuts?" "Where are the baby nose sucky-things?" "Where is the clove oil you use for toothaches?" They love me

.... Off to floss!

I'm in! I'm great about brushing (have even learned to do it softly) but just can't seem to get the hang of flossing. Just found out dh needs to see an endodontist so I have renewed motivation to keep my teeth as healthy as possible!

i flossed last night. i almost did the "i'm to tired" thing but i grabbed the floss onthe way to bed and flossed in bed. (my DP is gone for the week so i had no one to tell me flossing in bed is unattractive )

I flossed last night, will do it again tonight thanks to this thread and tomorrow I'm going to call and make an appointment for a cleaning/check-up.

Flossing daily and feeling good. I hope my next appointment goes well!

Here is a site that I found when I googled. They have some dental tools that look like the ones I have from my dentist. A mirror and pick set would be good. I use these once a month to get the hard calculus off from behind the front teeth. Flossing alone doesn't seem to get the calculus off the gum line but when I use the tools my appointments go very well. When I don't keep up with it it seems like my cleaning appointments are very long and painful.

Yeah nonnymomma! You'll feel SOO much better after your appointment! Avalonfaith, that's awesome you resisted the urge to go to sleep without flossing. I think that's how I got into the mess I'm in, largely; dd was a crappy sleeper all-night-nurser for 2 YEARS and I often went to bed without even brushing my teeth, let alone flossing. Yuck. I'm really trying to floss in the morning because when the sleepies hit, boy, it's tough.

this morning. I LOVE that smiley! Perfect for this.

Good job everyone! How long is it supposed to take before it's officially a habit? Maybe next month I'll tackle sunscreen!
