I've broken all but one glass...

We need recommendations for either REALLY strong glasses (drinking, not eye), or stainless steel, or something for drinking at home. We only drink water, milk, or tea, if that helps.

The kids generally drink from jelly jars (my grandma sends us tons of jelly in tiny jars...), but I would like something a bit more substantial/larger for DH and I.

Any ideas?

We have Libbey glasses. We bought juice glasses for the boys and larger glasses for adults. They're very durable and reasonably priced. We bought them at Bed Bath & Beyond individually. I think the large glasses were $1.69 each and the small were maybe $1.29. We bought six of each.

:

We go through glasses like crazy. I usually end up breaking them when washing. We do dishes by hand & they usually break while washing the inside.

I have working glasses that I like. Very study, and you can get covers for them for storage. Here's a link from crate and barrel, but you can get them other places. The short ones seem to get used more than the tall ones.

Greetings, We purchased Glass Footed Mugs... the reasons are:
  • they can be used as a glass or a mug
  • they are attractive enough for company
  • they have handles for smaller children
  • because they are footed - hot drinks do not leave a ring on the table.
Hope this helps

Uh oh! You're supposed to return those! Rule #1 of sharing in canned goods!!
Granny must not mind too much if she keeps sending them.

The strongest glasses I ever had were the kind they design for beer. Shaped like this http://www.sxc.hu/pic/m/f/fl/flitcro...beer_glass.jpg
They were very attractive and my cat knocked them off the counter countless times, often onto ceramic tile! They were surprisingly resilient!

I have Picardie glasses (Duralex) . Glass from France. Super strong and durable!!! Williams Sonoma used to have them but I was just searching and gather they don't have them anymore! So, I don't know where to get them new but I do see them in thrift stores, but usually not in sets. I normally wouldn't advocate buying glass from so far away but these are *so* great for longevity I think it is worth it!

Yeah, idea #1 dont buy glasses. Reuse glass containers. That way you always have plenty and if they break, no biggie. Plus, you are reusing something! I keep salsa jars, jelly jars, spaghetti jars.... as long as you dont mind them not being pretty, they are very functional, and I like the masony looking ones for a country look.

I got a 12pack from BB&B and I thing I broke all but 1 in a 12m period.

What I've found is the taller ones break easier, as you tend to put more pressure on the sides as you try to clean the bottom. I've had a pretty bad cut from doing this.

I now use short tumbler, that are wide and thick. They as have a better center of gravity and rarely get spilled.

over the winter break I stayed at a rental that had tons of coffee cups. I thought that was a perfect setup. They were sturdy, with a handle, and all of a different print so no one got confused over which one was theirs.

i use wide-mouth canning jars. i bought them for about $10 for a dozen at the grocery store. since they come with lids/rings, i also use them to store left-overs! they probably hold 12-16 ounces, so they are a decent size for an adult to drink from.

i bought ours from a resturant supply store in town. i reasoned that they must be pretty durable to withstand high volume use. don't know if my theory holds water (omg... bad, bad pun!!) but so far so good. we haven't broken one in about 5-6 months.

We use the jelly jars that are larger and look just like glasses in their shape. I don't know the brand, but they're maybe 16 oz. and straight sided, thick glass w/ a cross hatch design on the bottom third. We love them!
You can use mason jars or the mason jars w/ handles, that's what cute little cafe style restaurants do sometimes.
Do NOT buy correlle glasses-their dishes are great but I just looked at a glass funny and it would shatter.

Pint glasses, from Crate & Barrel or a restaurant supply store. They're really durable. We've had ours for years.

does anyone know where to find pint barrel glasses?

We got a dozen really solid drinking glasses from Ikea for, oh, about $5 last year. Super cheap to replace but pretty hard to break in the first place. And they look nice -- clean lines, not totally utilitarian.

My grandma is thinning out her "possessions" in anticipation of her, um, passing. She calls every so often to ask if I'd like this or that. So, the above rule doesn't apply to her.

Thank you for the ideas. I will be going through kitchen stuff this weekend, so I am hoping to replenish my drinking glasses, too.
