how to stripe (use more than one ball of yarn) & ballband question

OK, I received a ballband dishcloth today & now I know what all the fuss is about. This is a lovely piece of knitting. So . . .

--how do you change balls of yarn? this pattern calls for two balls of yarn -- how do I switch back & forth between colors without cutting the working yarn each time?

--in this pattern, you only knit with one color at a time, right? (i.e. you don't knit with two yarns for any portion, right?). I just can't figure out by looking at this cloth how you get those nice vertical "hatch marks" without holding two strands of yarn at once.

thanks in advance! and you know, the dishcloth I received was knit in high-quality, shiny merino. feels so much softer than Peaches & Creme/Sugar & Cream. I splurged and bought the nice stuff at my LYS this afternoon. thanks again! --Nancy in NC

You're working several rows of a single color at the time. The color changes always happen on the same end of the work so you just carry the unused color loosely up the side. The vertical "dashes" are made from the slipped stitches.

thanks, lupermom. I just launched into it last night. yup, I just carried the yarn up the side (rather than cutting & starting a new ball). and I just had faith and followed the pattern -- and voila! -- it worked (imagine that!). so can I use this same "carrying the yarn up the edge" technique for narrow striping on garments, too? thanks!
