Please tell me about the paperwork after a homebirth

Anyone want to tell me how they went about getting their baby's birth certificate, s/s number, passport and stuff? Does the fact you didn't give birth in a hospital cause problems with any of these?

Just trying to get my plan of action worked out!

Thanks.

My midwife sent in the paperwork for the birth certificate and SS card. We haven't needed a passport so haven't even considered that yet. Heck dh and I don't have them...

nak

my midwife also did the paperwork for the birth cert and ss card. we just had go pick up the birth cert or have it mailed once it was ready. for a passport you just need their birth cert when you apply.

It depends on where you live. In most places it's just as the other posters have described, but not always.

Talk to your midwife. Regulations and requirements vary state to state and even county to county. We have to do a TON of paperwork (notarized letters, bills, notarized affidavits, and a meeting with the baby at Vital Statistics) to get the bc because we live in a border county. If I lived 15 miles to the north in Orange County, my midwife would just need to mail in a form for us. So it really varies.

The midwife did the paperwork for us (in TN) and the SS card and birth certificate came in the mail. When we got DS a passport when he was 6 months old, it was no problem - like the PP said, all we needed was his birth certificate.

Thanks for the replies. I thought it would be more complicated for some reason...!

I will check with my midwife what she does after the birth regarding this stuff.

Thanks!

My midwife filled in all the paperwork necessary for the birth certificate and social security card. In terms of work for me, it was the same as a hospital birth. In terms of annoyance to me, it was less, because she chose her moments more wisely.

In my state if you want an actual hard copy of the birth certificate you have to send in a form, regardless of where the baby was born. My MW did a better job of providing the form/info to me than the hospital did with DS2.

I've never heard of a hospital or MW completing a passport application.
