It is now February!!!! - Page 3

Michael has a cold and the ever popular non-productive cough that comes with it - half sick kid hopped up on ventolin and going through the whole sibling-transition is not fun. I also have a lovely non-productive cough complete with post-nasal drip and now Alexander has some nasal congestion too. he can nurse fine and I am praying that it doesn't get beyond what it is since I am in no hurry to do the whole saline/nasal aspirator thing unless its really necessary. I can only hope he's gotten enough antibodies from me to keep the worst of it at bay.

Lots of thoughts to Rynna who is hopefully holding SeaMonkey right now as I type.

jenn- sorry that you all are feeling sick right now. would a hot steamy pot of water from the stove and a towel over your head help? my nose is so dry that i may need to do that, too. it's pretty non-invasive but you all may be beyond that sort of help and need something more serious. hope things heal up well quickly though.

helen and jenn- i crochet so i can use less hands and still read a book to my toddler. my mom is a fab knitter and i grew up with it my whole life.

samantha- sorry that you have a cold, too! i hope that you get good rest tonight. is your youngest still nursing/co-sleeping? that can take a toll on the sleep!

helen- way to go on getting out! my best friend has 4 and it doesn't seem as crazy to me b/c we just go everywhere all together. it can get busy in some places but usually it's easier than one would think. i am not the parent though so i stress less, of course. she is way more laid back than me, too. anyway, they are 18 months to 8 years old. the 6 year old is ezra's boyfriend and he stayed the night with us on friday and was just such a fun kid to share time with. he really cares for ez, too which melts my heart. i bet that each outing will get easier, just like it is every time your family grows! i am just so glad he is here!

elyse- hey fellow etsy mama! i love your stuff! we should co-ordinate a trade, if you are ever looking for jewelry. i am not doing custom stuff now b/c i needed to put that on hold to focus on this babe coming. i didn't want beading to compete for my time so i put most of my stuff away today. it was sad but i need to clear space in my mind that's all for the babe and not my jewelry these next two months or so. i bet i will be so renewed and inspired to dive back in after a brief break though! how do you like etsy? and, what makes you a doula "in hiding"? i am a doula...but i am out. ha ha

megan- i just added you as my myspace friend, if you are wondering who that is! i keep meaning to tell you that i love your girls' names. we had such a hard time narrowing it down with my dd. don't know if this one is boy or girl but we're stumped, again in narrowing it down and have more names than less, even!

rynna- been thinking of you today! look forward to hearing from you soon and seeing pics of the newest babe!

today, i woke up around 3:15am but got out of bed at 4:30am. was so tired by noon and took a 3 hour nap. now, i am awake after lying in bed for an hour with no sleep. ugh, i need one of those sleep schedules that the evil baby trainers suggest...for me!

The absence of knitting is largely down to peer pressure, plus the fact that I have seaming to do on two baby sweaters (one of which was finished over a year ago...) plus the whole toddler girl thing. crochet's a good idea- I want to have a go at those bluebird amigurumi things (in operamommy's blog) Instead, I read the red tent, which is fantastic especially at times like this, and the friday night knitting club, which is OK but you might as well just watch steel magnolias...
And Seamonkey should be earthside now, yes? :, especially for calm toddlers and no NICU.
I feel invincible- I got the boys to school on time yesterday, went to breastmates (mostly because I wanted to get baby's latch checked, it feels eeky on the left boob) took Skye out for lunch, had both kids asleep when I brought them in the house so I got a quick nap. School run, housework, tea, bath, bed and nothing at all went wrong. I even dealt with the news that Isaac has broken another pair of glasses calmly and witout screaming Today, of course, I have him at home because we have to go get his eyes retested (long story) plus the heel prick test, which is less good. But still...

Did it (I wish MDC had a proud smiley...)

Jenn, I hope Michael gets better soon. Is he wheezing with the cold, or just miserable?

Sorry for the shocking lack of personals above, I do know it's not all about me, honest :

Are you ready to laugh out loud, bury your head in your hands and drag your heavily pregnant/ newly postpartum boots over here to beat me and my husband senseless?

We still can't agree on a name. The more we look at him, the more he looks exactly like someone called River should look...although I could live without the gloopy eye, I'll admit. Isn't that sad? He's being registered either tomorrow or Thursday (steve forgot to write the appointment time down) so we really should get round to making our mind up one way or another. He just really, really looks like River.
Isaac calls him Bart

Just a post on the fly - today was my first solo day and I managed to get us out of the house and onto the two busses to go to a La Lache League meeting, my husband's library (NIP #2 - Yay me!), and then to Starbucks for coffee. My incison is telling me I did way too much (probably about 1.5 miles of walking broken up), but it felt good to know we can do this. I absolutely love my sling and Michael was a dream.

Babe needs to eat and has no problem letting the world at large know how pissed off he is to wait. TTFN and everpresent s to all!

2 buses? You're brave... I've only tried 1 so far.
I feel like an idiot. I was stressing with the buggy yesterday because there didn't seem to be very much room for River underneath and getting the carrycot thing in was hard... then today, I looked at it and found another zip that undid to make the back lie flatter : Doh.

I'm back. SeaMonkey was born at 11:58 Monday morning-- henceforth, he shall be known as Bear. He's super cute and mini. I'll write more about it later... the surgery went swimmingly, my milk is already in (boobs are HUUUUUGGGGEEE) and he's a great nurser. He's my biggest baby, but didn't quite make the pattern-- he fell short at 7 lbs 14 oz and 20.75". (Interestingly, as we were going in I told Mike that I was aiming for 8 lbs 4 oz and 21"-- he said, "7 lbs 12 oz, 20.5". He was a lot closer than I, but we were both a heck of a lot closer than the folks at the maternal-fetal medicine clinic. )

I adore him. I have loads of pictures, but I can't find the cord to load them from the camera so that will have to wait. And right now, I'm going to go brush my teeth in anticipation of passing out... I'm SO tired and I've got that flipping spinal headache.

Emily, we told Inland Revenue that he's here, and his name is River Douglas. I don't know if we can go back on that- theoretically, it must be possible to claim child tax credits with a nameless baby- but I think this is who he is. I'm sad to lose Samwise Sam Vimes, but once we looked at him, it never really fitted him. Now, of course, I have to pluck up the courage to tell my mother, and my aunt, and all the rest of my deeply scary family : Expect the sig change once I've done that...and mentioning name changes...

Rynna, glad to have you back with us. Go sleep off the headache and post pics when you're able, OK? I'm going to miss seamonkey's name in your sig though...

This probab;y belongs down in breastfeeding, but I'll ask here anyhow. We seem to be having some oversupply symptoms- he keeps pulling off, fussing at the breast and generally doesn't seem as content nursing as he did at first. This has been going on for 3-4 days, I think. Weight gain is good- he's up 6oz on his birth weight, 10 oz from Sunday- but there seems to be something going on. Oh- and his nappies are green, and he's still a touch jaundiced.
Worry? Or not?

Maybe try pumping or hand expressing a little off the top before you latch him on.

Yay Bear!

Helen - I'm having almost the oposite problem. Alex has been gaining very slowly and between the last two appointments he was down to 35g over the course of three days. I know I wasn't keeping up on my fluid intake and while talking to my girlfriend I realized I probably wasn't eating enough either. She asked me how much weight I had lost and I told her I didn't know - I haven't weighed myself at home in ages because it was just too damned depressing. Imagine my surprise when I found I was back to my pre-pregnancy weight - 40lbs in two weeks :. I've done almost 3L of fluid today, two good-sized meals and a few snacks and Alex is definitely seeming more satisfied. We'll be starting a bit of supplementation tomorrow with some pumped milk and I'm hoping he'll be back to the 20g/day that the ped wants so see in no time.

Time to feed again - TTFN!

Oh and Helen - look into block-feeding (2-3 hrs on heach side), it may help with the OALD and the green poops.

Yeah Helen, I would make sure you are feeding on only one breast at a time....I know green poo is usually a symptom of not enough hindmilk. HTH some!

: I'm a big fan of the "one boob per session" method for controlling overactive supply & overactive letdown as well as green poop & excessive gassiness in the babe. I've been doing things that way since Bean was a little fellow. I mean, if he "finishes" one boob and still seems hungry, you can always put him on the other... but in my experience, that rarely happens.
