Does your grocery store give a credit for reusable bags? - Page 3

We get $.02 or $.03 I can't remember which. Some of the cashiers don't remember (or maybe don't know?). Since it usually amounts to less than $.10 I don't really care much. What I think is interesting, though, is that they give the credit based on the number of cloth bags they use. My 4 cloth bags probably saves them 12-15 plastic bags which cost the store $.03 a piece. But I think it's nice they do it at all.

Raley's gives $0.05 a bag cash and Holiday gives $0.05 a bag store credit.

Yes, at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. And one of our local stores gives .5 a bag.

Kroger credits a nickel a bag and almost always it's for the number of bags I hand them, not the number of bags they use. Wild Oats will give you either a nickel in credit per bag or a "wooden nickel" which you can drop in the bins and they will donate a real nickel to the charity's bin you choose. There are usually three charities to choose from. Now that they are owned by Whole Foods, I'll be interested to see what happens to this practice.

I've gotten in the habit of always saying the bagger "you can pack them heavy" so that they understand to put more than four things in each bag.

I also don't care what my bag says on the side -- they're just lucky I bring my own! Some of mine say "Kroger" others say "Biggs" and I even have a "Target" bag and a "Whole Foods" bag. I have one that says "Clifton Natural Foods", which is a local HFS and I crack up every time I use it in Wild Oats. I also have one I found at Vinnie's that says "Hold Everything", which closed a couple of years ago, I believe.

Jaime~ I can't believe they give you a dirty look. Call 'em out on it!

I think more stores should be like ALDIs and charge for bags. People would certainly bring their own then!

I live in Italy and almost all of the supermarkets charge up to 6 cents per bag. (That's .06 Euro, so it's about $.09.)

Sadly, one would think that charging per bag would lead to more canvas bags and reusing bags, but I don't see a lot of it happening.

I love shopping with my Trader Joe's and Whole foods canvas bags here in Italy. I love how surprised the checkers are when they ask; "How many bags?" and I say; "None!" and proudly hold up my "imported" totes.

Side note: I have never seen Paper grocery bags offered anywhere but Ikea, which is, I know, not a supermarket, but they do sell food.

Here in Colorado Springs I get .10 from King Soopers, .05 from Safeway, .05 from Wild Oats and either .05 or .10 from Whole Foods. Wild Oats gives you the choice of receiving the $ or getting a wooden nickel; if you choose the wooden nickel you deposit in one of 3 selections to donate to local charity.

Somes stores here give a small credit (0.05), others simply charge for plastic bags.

I was at Ikea today for the first time in a good while and I noticed that they now charge for bags too!

I live somewhat rurally, only one chain out of the three around pay .05 per bag. I haven't ever encountered having to pay for the plastic UGH! All the stores I shop at still offer either paper or plastic...I use my canvas as often as possible...makes me sad that people look at me like I am nuts to do so
