I'm not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for, but it's an interesting read.

I haven't read the articles yet, but I wanted to give my experience. When my son was 3 months old my husband was layed off and subsequently I had to go apply for WIC for some of our basic needs, one of which was not formula. I told the lady that my son was 100% BF and she said "well, we will just give you the formula anyways, in case you change your mind." Yes, I was outraged and felt like I was being sabotaged. I quickly told her that no, I would not be interested in the formula checks and she just kinda shrugged and went ahead with the other things.

So yeah, I can definately see how WIC could be the number one purchaser of formula.

Too bad that the money going towards forumla WIC isn't spending on breastpumps, lansinoh lanolin and correct info on BF'ing.

To give the flip side, the WIC office in my town has no less than 4 breastfeeding posters up and will even allow a nursing mom a quiet room to nurse in. That being said, when I saw a mom in to add a baby there was no conversation about breastfeeding, mom said formula so they said ok. I was bummed to see that because this is an outlet that could really help breastfeeding mom's with more than just signage.

I will say they were impressed that my almost 3yo just weaned. And even gave me the good job speech for it . . .
