I have been searching for reasonable PUL patterns that are cute for boys and having trouble finding some. Can you just use an AIO pattern and put a cute fabric over basic white PUL? If so what fabric to use?

This book feels good in your hands. The paper is heavyweight, and the illustrations flow perfectly.

Yes. You can. Don't use flannel though.
Find fabrics that are rubbery -- I guess that's the best way to explain it. Anything that doesn't easily absorb and spread fluid. Cotton is OK, but synthetics are better. I have an awesome fabric that's tough, yet soft, thick, yet pliable, and seems perfect for the outside of diapers. I have NO IDEA what it is as someone gave the fabric to me. Yeah big help right?
Good luck. Just don't use flannel, or microfleece, but a thin fleece might work. I am experimenting right now with cuddly fleece, I'll let you know!

my favorite places to get cotton print PUL is www.acutabovefabrics.com and www.diapercuts.com Both have a great selection of prints, and it saves you the step of having to add an extra layer outside of the white PUL. Some people run into trouble with the cotton wicking moisture, but I find that only happens for me if the diaper underneath is sopping wet. Also wash and dry on hot once before using it to help reseal the PUL around the needle holes helps with this problem too.
