Speaking of natural induction wwyd?

Okay. My last labor was 2 hrs from the time I woke up feeling contractions to the time my son was born.

The birth before that was my dd2 and I had mild contractions for a few hours, not convinced I was in labor at all, then all of the sudden my water broke, the contractions suddenly became painful and my dd was born 45 minutes later.

My dh works at least 1 hr from home. The drive is longer during rush hour on Thursdays and Fridays, even worse if there happens to be an accident on the interstate that he takes coming home.

My midwife lives almost 2 hrs away.

Also my mom is coming to help us but she lives in PA and we live in AL. Her employer requires vacation to be turned in for the year each November. She took a guess and booked her vacation time for the week following my edd, assuming that I'll either have the baby before or while she's here, allowing her to help with the other kids after the birth.

All of this is stressing me out big time. I'm afraid my mom will come and go and we won't have the baby, thus leaving us with no help after the birth.

I'm also afraid my midwife and/or dh won't make it here in time. I have friends coming to help with the labor and birth and they can catch if needed but I really want my midwife and dh here.

My last baby was 10 lbs and of course I'm worried about shoulder dystocia, which could be a disaster if I'm here alone with just my friends trying to help the baby out. I really need my midwife here!!!

Anyway, in this situation, would you be asking your midwife to help with some kind of natural induction or would you just cross your fingers and pray for a longer labor that happens a right around the EDD and that everyone makes it in time for the birth? Or would you be thinking about some natural induction methods to try and plan it around a time when midwife and dh are nearby?

My midwife's assistant lives about 45 minutes away (not counting rush hour traffic) but works on Fridays from 3-11. She's a nurse and can't leave work if I call her, so my midwife plans on sticking around town during the time her assistant is working, so that if I do go into labor, at least one of them will be available to get to me within the hour. So the assistant would be able to get here quickly every day other than Friday, but I really would prefer that my midwife makes it in time, kwim?

Sigh...these are all the things that have been weighing on me lately.

Well.. i induced my last labor because of similar worries & it was pitocin induced.

first labor was less then 6 hours.. but for an hour & half I sat completly dialated & did NOT push (had an epi) because dh was driving from 5 1/2 hours away (he made it 10 mins before birth) & i wanted to wait

2nd labor was 2 hours 5 mins.. hospital an hour away. i gave birth within minutes of walking in

3rd labor i induced. I had group beta strep so they let the first iv bag drain before starting pitocin.. it was less then 4 hours from starting pitocin to birth.
I dont regret it.. it was a great birth

I have a new doc this time (old one moved).. my hospital is closer..but I keep hoping i dont go in labor while oldest dd is at school.. cause i dont know if we'd have time to go get her first .. it would take probably close to 1 1/2 hours for dh to go get her & then come get me.. then 30 mins drive to hospital
she dosent HAVE to be picked up.. i can call & have them put her on the bus to ymca afterschool care & my coworker would either keep her or bring her to us..BUT she really wants to be there for the birth.. BAD. she was in the room when her sister was born

anyways. if i could get my new doc to induce me .. i would. but my new doc wont consider till after my due date

i was eye balling some castor oil at the store today though.. im scared to try that though. read to many bad experiences!

*huge hugs* I completely understand your stress. It really sucks to be worrying about stuff like that when you're so close to the end, doesn't it?

I think that trying any of the natural induction methods is a good idea - membrane sweep, sex, etc. Those are SHORT labors, and while you never know, chances are you might have an even shorter labor this time around. And I don't blame you for wanting you midwife and dh to be there for your birth. Most of all - I think you should do what you're comfortable with!

Nikki Christina, I'm sorry you're stressed too! *hugs* Don't try the castor oil though - my sis tried it and it was HORRIBLE - and it didn't start labor!

It must be hard to feel so unsure of how quickly this next birth will be. If I were in your shoes, I would try to stop dwelling on the what-ifs, and really focus on the ideal outcome. Try visualizing the birth exactly the way you want it to happen as often as you can. Make affirmations that your dh and midwife will be there to support you. I am a firm believer that where you focus your energies makes a world of difference. I also believe that focusing on a possible negative outcome can make it more likely to happen. Sorry if that sounds woo-woo, but I've seen proof of it so many times in my own life that I can't deny it!

FWIW, my shoulder dystocia labour was markedly different: I was advised to push an hour after (accidental) rom, didn't want to, it hurt, shouldn't have done it. I KNEW it was wrong. If baby comes that fast, chances are it's going to be properly aligned and the birth is going to be easy, just fast.
I'm fessing up though: Saturday I took castor oil to try and stop the labour stalling out. I was already contracting regularly and strongly and felt the stall, had a stretch-and-sweep done by the midwife at lunchtime and wanted to keep things going. Two doses (2tsp each, 6 hours apart) did nothing- the other time I've induced with castor oil, a single teaspoonful got labour going, so baby obviously wasn't ready. Five days later baby came on his own schedule...
