Nursing at IKEA?

Does your IKEA have a mothers room of some sort? I was there this morning, and I noticed that the restaurant has free "bottle warming" services. They also have a kids play area, lockers, etc. It seems like the kind of place that ough to have some area for mothers (whether they are breast or bottlefeeding) to have somewhere to sit and feed their babies.

(Yeah I know you can sit and do it anywhere but for those of us with distractable babies it is nice to sit in a quiet area)

I was at Ikea today also and for the first time noticed the bottle warming and microwave station. The last time I was there I saw the mothers nursing room. It isn't near the food area though. The one at ours was nice and clean with a couple of comfy chairs and a changing station. It is near the bathrooms.

I've never seen a nursing room as such, but I've nursed dd all over there Also seen more than a couple of other nursing moms- often just sitting on furniture and such nursing

The closest thing to a "mother's room" I've seen at our IKEA is the family restroom. Not that I'm advocating nursing in a bathroom...unless you want to.

My favorite nursing spot at IKEA is the kids' furnishings area. The display "bedrooms" are set up with lots of little semi-private nooks (good for distractible kiddies), and BFing there is a great advertisement for parents-to-be.

I nursed little 2 month old dd in the bed section of Ikea, side-lying on one of the tester beds. (I asked an employee first if it was okay to lie down with the baby for a few minutes) While she was eating, a training group of new employees came through to learn about mattresses. Everyone oohed and awwed at the wee eating babe.

Our Ikea has two nursing rooms, one upstairs and one downstairs. Each room has comfy chairs, a changing table, and a sink for washing hands. There is also a family bathroom with changing facilities. The cafeteria offers food-warming service and organik baby food as well. I've nursed DS all over Ikea, in and out of the nursing rooms, the children's area, the cafeteria, the sofa section, and the bedroom displays without a second glance. But I'm not in the US, either.

I've been in two Ikeas that had family/nursing rooms. I don't remember the set-up of the one in Woodbridge, VA, but the one just north of Baltimore was a small room with a table, shelf, and comfy chair. There was a changing table to fold down from the wall. And then a separate door within that led to a small, private bathroom.

I usually just find a comfy couch or armchair.

My IKEA has a "mothers' room" that is a two-room bathroom. The first room has a changing table, comfortable sofa for nursing, and a sink. The second room (accessed from the first room) has a toilet. I distinctly recall seeing some sort of breastfeeding symbol on the door to that room. I felt very welcome nursing at IKEA.

But I would usually just nurse in a comfy chair elsewhere, and I never felt inhibited from doing so at IKEA or got any funny looks or comments from employees.

Yeah...they don't really seem to care. I've snuck off into one of thier "rooms" before and just nursed my baby. No big deal. I do remember seeing an area around the cafeteria with some chairs for nursing. It wasn't really a room, but it was in a quiet corner and was just kind of partitioned off from the rest of the noise. There was also a small changing room with a chair.

I'm speaking of the Houston one though...don't know about any other ones. I'

Our IKEA in Atlanta has GREAT nursing mothers' rooms but of course moms nurse all over the place, no matter what. I love it. (Actually, the only women I've ever seen in the nursing moms' rooms are pumping moms who just need a place to sit and pump.)
I am a bottle nurser due to a breast redux (they removed my mammary glands), but I love going there and pointing it out to DS (discreetly, of course) that these mommas are feeding their babies the best food they could ever get. I hope to drill it into DS's head that, though he is certainly loved, healthy and smart, breastfeeding is the BEST way to feed a baby. IKEA is the #1 spot to find nursing moms around here.

Our family washroom in Ikea is split into two rooms. One has the toilet and a sink. The other has a comfy chair and side table. With wall toys and a changing table and sink. Only the toilet room can be locked. The nursing area is not lockable. I've had Moms walk in and excuse themselves like I forgot to lock the door. DS is so distractable. I think next time I am just going to find a display room that is not too busy.

The IKEA where I used to live rocked my socks for nursing areas. The children's play area in the cafeteria had a big couch on one side of it, with a sign right there stating the couch was primarily for use by nursing moms!

They also had a private nursing area--a little room with some toys for any accompanying toddlers, and a couple of comfy rocking chairs.

I wrote up a comment card with a big for that couch though.

I enjoy NIP for the whole lactivist reason but as DS gets older the distraction factor is just too much. He would stretch my nipple 10 feet to get a good look around the room. He is distractible enough in a QUIET room. LOL
I didnt see any nursing moms there. Or anywhere. I dont think anyone nurses in this area at all ... other than other MDC moms.

IKEA sounds semi crunchy to me!

We've only been to an IKEA 1x since DS was born and I nursed him while walking, while eating lunch, while sitting on the mattresses.... I don't remember any seperate area.

I didn't see any other nursing mothers (or any other mothers using a sling or carrier and not a gigantic stroller, for that matter. I don't know why I remember that, but it clearly made an impression).

As far as I know the Ikea in Houston "only" has a nursing area in the food area. It has arm chairs and is a bit partitioned off, but isn't behind any closed doors.

I was there last weekend bed shopping. I nursed my 17 month old toddler several times while we were there, on chairs, on a couch, in a sling, and side lying on a bed we were testing. The bed was in a pretty heavy flow area (it was Saturday, so the place was super crowded). One woman saw DD trying to lift my shirt on the bed as I went to nurse her. She commented, "oh, I can tell she's a big breastfed baby That's great I can tell, I"m a nurse..." Someone else said it was the best way to test a bed (which is quite true). In the end, we bought the bed and mattress. We moved from a double to a king. I love how low the bed is. It's perfect for my little toddler.

Philly's ikeas have i think they were called "baby comfort rooms" something like that. comfy chair, changing table private bathroom etc.

ikea was my first nip! ds was maybe 2 weeks old and i was finally ready to beone my feet for more than 2 mins.

i used to always joke when i was pregnant that if i wanted to be around other preggos i would go to ikea, every other person is pregnant there!

I don't know, but they've got very comfy beds!

The IKEA in Schaumburg, IL has a large mothers/nursing room. It is clearly designed for more than 1 mom/baby/family at a time. There are a few comfy seats. I went in to try to avoid distraction but it was MORE distracting in there. There were more babies and young kids for my son to look at in there and he wouldn't nurse. We had a better time out in the shopping area.

There's a mothers room at our IKEA, near the bathrooms, with a chair for nursing. Nothing special though.
