Sad fact

I was speakiing with an acquaintance tonight who is a nurse. We were talking about babies and she made the comment that she didn't circumcise her son who is now 15. I was happily surprised to learn this!

I don't know what area of the hospital she worked in when she was there but she made the statement that the peds and the OBs race to see who can do the circumcision first to get the money.

I was totally repulsed by this but sadly not surprised!

That is so grotesque and ghoulish, and also not surprised. Shows you how serious they take that "Hippocratic Oath"....they should call it the Hippocritic oath.

Yes, I still remember how disappointed my OB looked when I informed her we weren't circumcising our son I wondered why at the time.

Puppy Fluffer, it would be interesting to find out the 'compensation' rate that those 'doctors' get. I wonder why they don't put that info in the circ consent forms that the parents sign...hmm....:

Sad fact

Parental ignorance makes a nice little gravy train for those who mutilate babies!

I'm not surpised. Here the OB's do it. The OB who delivered my son, after we almost had an emergency c-section after over 3 hours pushing & over 24 hours of labor, while I'm still getting stitched up asked me if I wanted him to circ the baby before he left. I was the last patient he had before going home, so he wanted to circ the baby within the next hour basically. When we said no, we weren't doing it, he didn't say anything to try to change our minds or anything but commented that "well, I figured if you were I'd go ahead & get the extra pay while I'm here instead of letting the OB on weekend shift get it."

Puppyfluffer: Why not suggest that she write up a short article on that for The Compleast Mother, published in Minot, SD. I am sure they would publish it. Docs always deny that money is any motivation. They need to be called on it in public. From Medicaid statistics we know that money does matter. In low paying states the rate of circ is much lower than in high paying ones.

And although I have no vested interest in THE COMPLEAT MOTHER magazine...

that is such a wonderful idea.

That magazine is such a rich, warm, sincere publication.

You can find info at www.compleatmother.com

I hope everyone has a chance to review at least one of their publications...you won't be able to get enough.

(It is almost the tangible counterpast to MOTHERING...very non-mainstream= supporting natural family>pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding, etc...)

The "extra pay" comes in two forms. First in the inordinately profitable procedure (as a factor in the time invested) and secondly in the belief among many that they will lose a paying customer if they don't offer the procedure. I suspect that many pediatricians look wistfully at all the babies that the OB/GYN got to first.

Now, there is a whole new level of competition with midwives getting permission from state legislatures to perform circumcisions. Being on a lower pay level than doctors, midwives increase their earnings substantially more than doctors. The midwives have fought doctors in protracted battles in state legislatures to get in on the gravy train.
