Teaching a 7 yr old to spin

dd2 is just 7. She can knit garter stitch & cast on without any help. Recently she has said she wants to learn to spin.

Has anyone taught a young child to spin? Would a drop spindle or a wheel be easier ?

They are pretty similar in terms of ease of use. The spindle has a few advantages for learning to spin though: it is cheap; it takes up very little space; they are somewhat less breakable; and it doesn't require assembly.

AND you can do it anywhere! I do suggest a good quality spindle though - I started on a spindle made from car wheels and had horrid results. I was given an ashford and LOVE it.

I can get an ashford drop spindle relatively easy. I've never spun with one myself, only with a wheel so I would have to learn too.

There was an article in a recent spin-off about teaching children to spin: they actually held a spinning party, I believe, where the daughters friends were taught to spin. IIRC, they started by making roving angels, then drafted some roving and rolled it on their legs to make yarn, THEN got the spindles out. My boys can spindle, but can't handle the wheel, it's just too big for them. I see childrens spinning blogs where other youngsters of the same age have no problem with a wheel, though :

There are child sized wheels. I've seen several antique ones, and babe makes one called the pinkie.

That's just cheating I'm sure I've seen an 11yo's blog where he and his sister both spin on their mums' ashford traditional though... weird.
