Anyone Know?

I was wondering if anyone knew the actual statistics for infant circumcision over the last several years. If you can get up to 2007, it would be really great. I highly doubt you could, but I would also like to know the statistics on consented adult circumcisions. The U.S. would be fine, but worldwide would be even better.

I'm 19, circumcised, and seeking justice.

stats are only available up to 2005 on MGM. They are published every 3 years I believe. I have no idea how to find the stats on adult circ. My guess would be to consult this association:

http://www.auanet.org/

perhaps they can tell you where to look for these stats...

You can find the historical circumcision rates for The United States and some other countries at www.cirp.org. Just search "circumcision rates." The circumcision rate is tabulated every two years (odd years) and the results are released in late Feburary or March of the following year. The results for 2007 will be available in about a month. However, the circumcision rate for 2007 is expected to be at or below 50%.

There are no statistics kept for adult circumcisions in North America but some countries keep statistics for the lifetime circumcision rate. For instance, it is 1 circumcision per 18,000 males in Sweden and 15 circumcisions per 100,000 males in Finland. These are for all reasons that are paid by these countries national healthcare systems but would not include those paid by the patient. Those would include ritual circumcisions and those for cosmetic purposes that are very rare in those countries.

Time is of the essence. In most states, you have 3 years from your 18th birthday and you have to get your suit filed within that time. Don't let your time run out!

David Llewellyn is a member here. He is a lawyer who specializes in circumcision cases and is the preeminent lawyer in this field. You can contact him through the Mothering private messaging system. His screen name is "Dave2GA." David is the lawyer who has pursued the only similar case in America, that of William Stowell. William's case was successful. Simply by pursuing your case, you will make a significant impact on circumcision in America and elsewhere.

This is an issue that is taking on an international impact. Just recently, courts in Finland and Germany have declared circumcision illegal. The President of The Tasmanian Chapter of The Australian Medical Association has joined the Childrens Commissioner in lobbying the legislature of Australia for a law making circumcision illegal in Australia. This follows a policy change banning circumcisions in Australian public hospitals. There was also a decision in The Oregon Supreme Court last week that said a child's wishes must be considered in his circumcision with the implication that he can not be circumcised if he doesn't consent to it.

The end to circumcision will come with actions such as this. I only wish the statute of limitations had not run out for me or I would be pursuing a case too.

I have already contacted David Llewellyn, but he is currently busy with case in Oregon, and say he will need to get funding for whatever reason. I was told by another member that funding would not be required to take the case to court, but I'm putting my trust in David that he knows what he is doing. I hadn't heard that Finland and Germany made circumcision illegal. Do you have any sources I could look at?

I was not aware that David was involved with the Oregon case. You might try John Geisheker at Doctors Opposing Circumcision although I know he is heavily involved in the Oregon case too. You might also try Steven Svoboda with Attorneys for the Rights of the Child. If Steven can't help you, he might know someone who could.

These attorneys take cases on a pro bono basis (at no charge) when they can but there is a limit to how many of these they can take. They do have to pay the rent and put beans on the table. They will take the ones with the greatest chance of success first and most of those would involve circumcision injuries.

Here is a link to an article on the Finnish case: http://www.hs.fi/english/article/Cou.../1135220958830

I don't have a link to the German case but you should be able to find it at www.cirp.org. Just search the site for "German."
