What's the general procedure for adding a gusset to longies?

I generally use the LTK longies pattern but I also do Aubrey Doodlepants both of which I like and work well for a newborn. Everyone says a gusset would really help out for my toddler. How would I go about adding a gusset to a pattern that doesn't call for one? I think I can kind of visualize how to do it but not quite. TIA.

THere's a couple ways you can do it. If your library has knitting books, look for a book on knitting gansey sweaters. The underarms on those have gussets.
