Convince me I'm not a bad mom!

So DS 1 year check up and shots were today. He is up to date on his vax's, except for today: my fiance and discussed it and decided to opt out of the Chicken Pox vax. I knew the doc was going to give me flack; in fact I warned Ryan not to cave. But, jeepers! You would have thought I was subjecting my child to AIDS instead of Chicken Pox! "Children DIE from chicken pox!" And something about his brain rotting and horrible scars all over his body, b/c CP isn't "run of the mill" like when we were kids, now it's this "super virus" and I "don't want Darren getting Chicken Pox!"

Okay. I KNOW I'm not a bad mom. Out of 4 million cases a year, there are fewer than 100 deaths. Even with the vax, there's still a good chance he'll get CP (which she told me, but when I said it sounded pretty pointless then, she said, "Oh, but it'll be mild, and he won't get complications from it!"). Still, I have a shadow of a doubt in my mind.

Please reassure me!

PS-->She also said, "Well you wouldn't want him to get measles, would you?" which was the wrong thing to say . I was like, "Actually, I wouldn't care if he got them naturally, but I know he [my fiance] would, so I pick my battles." Of course, I got cut off in the middle of that sentence

I've heard other peds. claiming that chickenpox is "different" now.

What I haven't heard is the tiniest bit of evidence showing that... :

Total BS propaganda as far as I'm concerned.

One of my favourite photos of myself is when I had the Chicken Pox. I was on a balcony in Hawaii (the salt water actually felt pretty good) in a pretty little dress. I would have laughed in the doctor's face. You're so not a bad mom.

you arent a bad mom from keeping more chemicals, toxins, pollutants, and animal tissue out of your childs body.
chicken pox is NOT a big deal, and its better to get them than to not, cause shingles as an adult is horrific

I read somewhere that a doctor told a mom that her child could get "flesh-eating bacteria" from out of control chickenpox.

My question is: How out of control would that HAVE to be?!?!?!

Yeah, I think that might have been mentioned *eye rolll*

Honestly, I was kinda tuning her out from the start b/c I knew I wasn't going to change my mind.

Having chickenpox doesn't prevent shingles.

Actually the key to avoiding a nasty secondary bacterial infection from CP is to avoid fever reducers. If the child has a fever basically the flesh eating bacteria can not take hold.
