C/S needed?

When is C/S really needed?

I ask knowing that most are not needed, that certain docs make having one more likely, that all women in my family have very difficult pregnancies & deliveries.
Although interested in home-birth, I am wondering if in my case it is too risky and expensive-esp. if/when medical intervention comes into play.
The women in my family have had incompetent cervix and worse. My mother had at least 4 miscarriages; with each of the three of us who lived, she had gestational diabetes and pre-ecclampsia which developed into full toxemia with her third living child. My female cousins all have similar OB/GYN related issues.
I had gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia with my dd ending in C/S after unsuccessful vaginal delivery attempt. My dh and I are trying to have another and I am curious about my options.

Your question is really hard to answer. I can't just say that if you have x, y, and z conditions you need a c-section and if you don't have them then you will have a vaginal birth. I think a c-section is really needed when vaginal birth is not an option (for whatever reason) and the baby needs to be born for the health of the mother or child.

No one can predict if you will face the exact same health concerns this time around either. Pre-eclampsia is most common in first time moms, so that means that many moms aren't getting it the next time around. I think the best thing to do, if you are interested in a homebirth, would be to read up a lot on it and birth in general, make an appointment with a midwife and then discuss your individual health history with her face-to-face. You might get a better feel for things this way.
