I received the following email last night and thought it should be shared here:
Hello everyone,
Patty Onderko, senior editor at Babytalk, recently published a piece
in the magazine entitled "A Night in the Life Of…A Mom-To-Be of
Twins." It's a light piece chronicling a typical night of aches and
pains that many pregnant women experience, especially those carrying
twins.
In the beginning of the piece, Patty writes "10:00 P.M.: My wife,
Emily (I'm married to a woman), says goodnight and turns off her
nightstand light." Though the article has nothing to do with Patty
being a lesbian, this one line has caused an absolute uproar among
Babytalk readers. The editors are getting flooded with hate mail and
one woman even wrote in that she literally "threw up" in her mouth
when she read the piece. Many of the readers are "horrified" that a
"family-friendly" publication would print the article at all, let
alone use language like "wife."
The editors and publishers at Babytalk did, in fact, take a chance by
running the piece and with employing that kind of language. Please
(please!) send them a letter thanking them for taking that stance.
Here's all the information:
Publication: Babytalk
Writer: Patty Onderko
Title of article: "A Night in the Life Of…A Mom-To-Be of Twins"
Send response to: Letters@babytalk.com
Even a quick one-line email of support will help counter the hate mail.
Thank you!
