Teaching DC to knit--how old?

At what age did you teach your DC to knit? My dd is 5.5 and interested, but as I still struggle with basic knitting myself sometimes, I'm thinking it'll be too much for her. Just curious, at what age did you teach your children?

My dd is 5.5 yo too. She wanted to learn to knit as well so I bought her a mushroom type thing that knits tubes. It gives her a chance to work with yarn and get an idea for how loops are made for knitting. But, she isn't really sticking with it. I think it's boring for her. She didn't really take to the potholder loom either. I haven't tried needles yet because I'm just not sure I can be a good teacher, although I did teach my 14 year old niece to knit a couple weeks ago. I haven't been able to teach my dd to tie her shoes! I bought a book about teaching kids to knit and it has great illustrations and easy to understand concepts for kids. I just haven't jumped in...she's left handed and I also knit a funky version of continental. But success stories of others teaching a 5 yo to knit would be encouraging!

DS has been trying it on and off since about 4. He gets it now, for the most part. But, he doesn't have the attention span to sit nad do it for tooo long yet.

A lady at knitting group taught DD when she was 6.5. She'll be 9 tomorrow!!!!! and has taught herself to cast on, cast off, and purl, and finally has the attention span to sit and knit for a half hour or more at a time. She has 5 projects on the needles right now.

That's great!
Dd also has the 'nifty knitter' and was really going to town on it for a couple of days, then lost interest. I think needles would be frustrating for her right now.

Dd wants to learn, but we're holding off a bit until she's six (in April.) She learned to finger knit in her Waldorf kinder this fall, and really enjoys it.

She's always wanting to grab my needles when I'm knitting, so I think she'll really relish having her own pair to dabble with.

Good luck, mama!

My husband teaches guitar to children that are about 5 years old and up. If they can play guitar, they should be able to knit (especially if they really want to learn).

I came to this forum looking for hints for teaching children, so I'm glad I found this thread. I JUST started like (as in - I'm teaching myself as of last week) and my 5 yo dd wants to learn as well - she keeps trying to pick up my needles and mess up my already kind of messed up practice swatches. I remember doing spool knitting when I was around 6-7 - making tubes, so maybe I will get her something like that. Since I'm so new to knitting myself, I don't think I could teach her actual knitting, so I think I will go and see what kind of things they have for kids.

Whenever they ask.
And be ready to reteach often.

At this point my 10 year old son, is pretty durn good at it.
My 9 year old son still only crochet's pouches, and hates knitting.
And my 2 year old daughter likes using the needles to really knot the yarn ball. But of course she LOVES to knit!

I learned to crochet when I was 4 and embroider when I was 5. Didn't learn to knit until I was 30. DS is interested in knitting at 6.

My son's old school taught them how to knit with needles in 1st grade, when he was 5.
