Milk Production Question

I swear my right boob is producing way more milk than my left. I knew it was fuller and Eli was having a really hard time latching on. Finally gave up and put him on my left side and pumped the right at the same time. I pumped out 8 ounces in the time he nursed which was about a half hour. Being new to pumping- is it common to have one producing more than the other?

My left one is the super producer compared to the right. It's always been bigger than the right one too. Usually I'd always start dd on the right side and let her finish on the left, then pump any "extra" that seemed to be there. I think it's a fairly normal thing to happen. Really as long as you're producing enough for your babe, then it doesn't matter which side it's coming from.

I have a girlfriend whose son will only nurse on one side. For the last year and a half she's had one breast a full cup size larger than the other - I think if the same thing happens with her next child, she'll pump the one he doens't nurse on so at least bras are more comfortable!

I think it's pretty normal for one breast to produce more but I haven't done it yet!

Glad to hear bfing is going so well!

My right nipple is higher flow LOL...both of my babies preferred it because of that! I just made sure to nurse on both of them as usual whie they were little. I usually start on one side, let them nurse it mostly dry, then switch, starting on the side I switched to next time. At least this way my breasts stayed moderately the same size LOL.

Good to know I'm normal. Nursing is definately gpong better than I ever could have imagined.

Not in your DD club, but just wanted to say it's totally normal for one side to produce more than the other. Also, if you're too full for your DC to latch on easily, you can always pump for a minute or two to alleviate some of the milk. This may not be the best solution if you have an oversupply, however.

Pumping 8 ounces on one side is AWESOME!

Thanks Betsy! That side hasn't filled back up like that since I emptied it out yesterday. Baby is taking it much easier since then too.

If the latch isn't happening because of the breast being too full, it's fine to pump or express just enough to soften the breast slightly, and it shouldn't affect the milk supply. Just don't continue to nurse on one side only and then pump the other side completely unless you want to have mucho milk!
