home birth in a hot tub

Is bromine ok for a birth? (I use a very small amount). Should I drain the whole thing before the birth, or is this not an issue? Does anyone have any experience using baking soda or any other alternatives to mainstream spa chemicals? I imagine plain water would be best but it's difficult to know the timing of the birth KWIM, and I need to be able to use it every day leading up! I appreciate any input!

so do you just drain it every so often to clean it, or has that not been an issue?

it hasnt been an issue. its heated all the time though, so no on and off.

just an update..
we use the ozonater...which puts ozone (O3) into the water which kills the bacteria.

We have a hot tub with just the ozonater as well, I'd been wondering if it was an option! hmmmmmm

But, I'm due in July, and in California, it could well be 80 degrees in the middle of the night or early morning, not to mention daytime heat, the hot tub might be the last place I wanna be! But, it would be nice to know it was an option.

I'll probably end up turning it low enough that it still feels soothing, but keep it high enough that if I need it to heat up more it won't take forever. I keep debating getting a tub, but with a hot tub, a swimming pool, and 2 bathrooms one with tub and one with giant shower I just feel silly! And yes, I know I can't actually have the kiddo in the swimming pool, but nothing says I won't be lounging about in the pool as long as I possible can! haha

I rented a "spa in a box" for my 2 homebirths & was given bromine to add to it as needed. (we set it up when I was 38 weeks to use & relax in before the birth) We would check the levels with those little paper stick dipper things. With the birth of DS we weren't told anyting about draining & adding fresh water without chemicals, but with the birth of DD we were told that it would be better if we could drain & add fresh water for the birth, but if we didn't get around to it/have the time then that was okay too.

What temp. do you guys set your tubs at? Since about 25 weeks, I've been using ours and it's helped sooo much. We live in Alaska and it's usually freezing out, so we set it at 102. My husband usually gets in before my son and I to remove the lid for us. I stall so the temp will drop some and by the time we get it it's usually about 100, which still feels good and hopefully not too hot for baby. We only stay in for about 10 mins or so.

We are planning a waterbirth, but not in our hot tub. I've purchased a "birth pool in a box" from waterbirth.org and plan on using fresh water with sea salt. But, I'm curious what the temp of the water should be. I really want it hot enough to enjoy it, but not sure if it has to be a certain temp for birth.

Thanks ladies.......

I am planning on getting a softub for the birth. I rented from my MW last time for $250 and it just makes more sense to buy because we can either use it later or sell it(or let other mama's in the NH area-hint hint) use it!

we have a hot tub that we may use for labor/birth...anytime now! we drained it and cleaned it out well with natural cleaners. gave it a nice long rinse.

to treat it, we are using colloidal silver. it is fabulous, non-toxic and totally safe for a babe to be born into. it's naturally anti-bacterial. not sure which website dh ordered it from but here is one: http://www.purestcolloids.com/hottubsilver.htm
