I just wanted to post about some of the treatments that have helped me. I suffered with depression with both children, and with my second child to a much greater degree.
I experienced:
-severe irritability
-suicidal feelings
-wanting to harm my older child
-wanting to hurt myself
-lethargy
-inability to loose weight
-generalized puffiness
-difficulty concentrating
-short-term memory problems
-muddled thinking
-inability to express myself well verbally
There's probably more, but that should do it for now. Anyway, my best friend, and neighbor is a LLL leader, and she read in Leaven about the relationship between depression and inflammation. She shared the article with me and it was truly life-changing.
The article discussed a strong correlation between supplementing with Omega-3 oils and decreased inflammation and symptoms of depression. They specified that the oils had to be from a fish source -- flaxseed did not produce the same effect. The ones that I take are 500 mg each, I believe, and I take them one at a time, 3 x per day for therapeutic effect.
I also worked with a homeopath to find the right remedy for my depression. We tried several that didn't work, and then, finally got the right one, and the difference in my life is even more marked.
I definitely still have days when I have to haul out the frozen foods for dinner, but I definitely feel that my family has the real me back, and I no longer feel that I am crazy.
In the earlier months post-partum, I had a lot of pain to deal with -- my baby and I have had thrush on and off, as well as a few breast infections. That made things very hard.
If you do just one thing, please try the Omega 3 supplement, and be vigilant about it. It really turned things around for me.
Oh, and do make sure that you get one that has been purified -- supplementing with just fish itself or an impure source can have too much heavy metals when you take therapeutic doses. I got mine at Costco.
